May in Yokohama runs at two speeds. Golden Week fills the opening days with domestic tourists, but from roughly May 7 the city settles into one of its calmest, greenest stretches of the year, with daytime highs averaging 22°C (72°F) and nights around 15°C (59°F). That is warm enough for a T-shirt on the Osanbashi Pier boardwalk, and cool enough that you will want a layer when the wind comes off Tokyo Bay after dark.
May is also wetter than most visitors expect. Open-Meteo's five-year average makes it the rainiest month on Yokohama's calendar, ahead of June and September. The showers arrive in fronts that clear within a day, which is a different matter from the week-long grey drizzle of tsuyu that usually settles over Kanto in early June. And that rain is what keeps the Yamate hillside so green.
The roses are the real reason to come. The gardens on the Bluff above Motomachi peak in the second half of May, and on a warm evening the scent carries down the slope toward the harbor. Sankei-en, a garden dating to 1906, usually opens for firefly evenings in Honmoku as the month closes out.
Why visit in May
- Once Golden Week ends, weekday queues at the CupNoodles Museum in Minato Mirai and outside the steamed-bun stalls of Chinatown usually drop to a few minutes.
- Rose season peaks from mid to late May, when the English rose beds at Minato-no-Mieru-Oka Park and the Yamashita Park plantings are in full color.
- Terrace seating at Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse and along the Kishamichi Promenade stays comfortable into the evening, a window that closes in July when highs reach 31°C (88°F).
- Yokohama DeNA BayStars home games run through May at Yokohama Stadium, which opened in 1977, and weekday outfield tickets often remain available a few days out.
Worth knowing
- The five-year record makes May Yokohama's wettest month, so plan roughly 1 flexible day in 3 around indoor fallbacks in Kannai or Minato Mirai.
- Golden Week packs Yamashita Park and the Chinatown gates shoulder to shoulder, and Tokyo day-trippers crowd the Minatomirai Line on the three peak holidays.
- By the final week of May, still days in Kannai feel noticeably sticky, and linen shirts wilt by midday.
- Hydrangeas are the flower most visitors link with nearby Kamakura, and they do not peak until June, so a May trip misses the blue season at Meigetsu-in.
Best for
Think twice if
May is the warm, green middle of Yokohama's spring. Mornings in Minato Mirai start mild, and afternoons in the sun on Osanbashi Pier feel close to summer, though the Tokyo Bay breeze usually cools the harbor quickly after sunset. Rain falls on about 14 days, often as a grey front that sits over the city for an afternoon and a night before clearing. Humidity averages 77%, and it feels soft rather than heavy until the last week of the month, when Yamate's lanes start to smell of wet stone and cedar before a storm.
Seasonal caution
- Rainfall averages 205mm (8.1 in) in May, the highest monthly total in Yokohama's five-year record and above the 200mm (7.9 in) heavy-rain threshold. Strong fronts can suspend the Sea Bass water bus between Yokohama Station and Yamashita Park, so check its service notices on wet mornings.

Best things to do in May
Rose walk across the Yamate Bluff
natureStart at Minato-no-Mieru-Oka Park, cross past the Western-style houses of the Bluff to Yamate Italian Garden, and finish at Yamashita Park by the harbor, a route of roughly 2 km (1.2 mi) that runs mostly downhill if you begin at the top.
The spring rose bloom usually peaks after mid-May, and by June the petals are battered by rain.Booking tipGo on a weekday before 10am to beat the tour buses from Tokyo.
Firefly evenings at Sankei-en
natureThe Honmoku garden holds special evening openings when Genji fireflies drift over the stream near the Old Yanohara House, a thatched farmhouse moved here from Gifu Prefecture.
Firefly season in the garden generally runs from late May into early June, a window of about 2 weeks.Booking tipSankei-en posts exact dates in mid-May, and since weekend evenings draw local families, a weekday is calmer.
BayStars night game
sportsThe ballpark sits inside Yokohama Park in Kannai, where the outfield stands sing through all 9 innings and beer vendors carry kegs on their backs up and down the aisles.
May nights are the most comfortable of the season for an open-air stadium. By July the concrete holds the day's heat long after dark.Booking tipBuy on the BayStars site 1-2 weeks ahead for holiday games.
Dusk walk from Kishamichi Promenade to Osanbashi Pier
outdoorsFollow the old rail line over the water from Sakuragicho past the Red Brick Warehouse to the wooden, whale-backed roof deck of Osanbashi Pier. The Minato Mirai skyline lights up behind you.
Sunset in mid-May falls around 6.40pm, and the sea air stays mild enough to linger on the deck.Day trip to Kita-Kamakura and the Tenen Hiking Course
day tripThe JR Yokosuka Line reaches Kita-Kamakura in about 25 minutes, and from Kencho-ji the Tenen ridge trail runs about 5 km (3.1 mi) under maples toward Zuisen-ji.
The maple canopy reaches its brightest spring green in May, and the ridge runs dry and cool where the rainy season leaves other trails muddy.Booking tipSkip the three peak Golden Week holidays, when Kamakura Station queues stretch around the block.
Shomyo-ji garden and Kanazawa Bunko
cultureThe museum grew out of a samurai-era library founded in 1275, and a tunnel connects it to the pond garden of Shomyo-ji, where a red arched bridge crosses the water.
Fresh maple leaves frame the bridge in May, and the walk from Kanazawa-Bunko Station takes about 15 minutes in mild weather.Booking tipCheck the museum calendar, because it closes between exhibitions.
Rainy-afternoon museum circuit in Kannai
cultureThe Yokohama Archives of History, opened in 1981 on the site of the former British Consulate, sits within 500 m (0.3 mi) of the Kanagawa Prefectural Museum of Cultural History and Yokohama Port Museum.
Wet afternoons come often in May, and this cluster lets you swap plans in minutes without leaving Kannai. What to eat in May
On menus now
Nama-shirasu don
Boats off Enoshima and Koshigoe land whitebait every spring morning, and raw shirasu over rice is served fresh that day, so rough seas after May storms can cancel the supply.
Takenoko gohan
Bamboo shoots from the Kanagawa hills peak from late April through May, and takenoko gohan, rice cooked with the shoots, turns up on set lunches in Kannai.
What to drink
Shincha (new-season green tea)
The first flush of green tea from Shizuoka, the prefecture southwest of Kanagawa, arrives in Yokohama tea shops in early May, and it tastes grassier and sweeter than anything picked later in the season.
In markets
Hatsu-gatsuo (first bonito)
Spring bonito runs up the Pacific coast past Sagami Bay in April and May, and izakaya in Noge serve it as straw-seared tataki with grated ginger and garlic. It is leaner and cleaner-tasting than the fatty autumn catch.
Festival food
Kashiwa-mochi
Oak-leaf-wrapped rice cakes filled with sweet bean paste fill wagashi counters in Motomachi and Yokohama Station's department-store food halls for Children's Day. Most shops stop making them within 2 weeks of the holiday.
German lager and bratwurst at Frühlingsfest
The spring beer festival at the Red Brick Warehouse pours Bavarian lagers in half-liter (17 oz) steins alongside grilled sausages and pretzels.

Insider tips
On Golden Week afternoons, eat in Chinatown before 11am or after 2pm. Side lanes such as Ichiba-dori stay far calmer than Chukagai Odori.
The Akai Kutsu loop bus links Sakuragicho, the Red Brick Warehouse, Chinatown and Harbor View Park, and saves the steep climb to Yamate on a wet day.
After a rain front clears, go straight to the Sky Garden on floor 69 of Yokohama Landmark Tower: rain-washed air gives May's best odds of seeing Mount Fuji, about 80 km (50 mi) west.
Hatsu-gatsuo tends to be cheapest and freshest at the standing izakaya under the tracks near Sakuragicho Station, where the menu boards change daily.
Avoid these mistakes
- Booking a Kamakura and Enoshima day trip for the peak holidays. Boarding queues for the Enoden line at Kamakura Station can run 30 to 60 minutes on those afternoons.
- Leaving the rain shell at the hotel because the morning over Minato Mirai looks clear. Fronts often roll in from Sagami Bay by mid-afternoon.
- Assuming the Sankei-en evening hours apply every night. The firefly openings run on set dates only, and the garden normally closes at 5pm.
Practical tips for May
Book Golden Week rooms 2 to 3 months ahead, particularly bay-view rooms in Minato Mirai. Most Yokohama museums close on Mondays under normal circumstances, but during the holidays they stay open and push that closure to the following weekday, so check schedules before you plan a museum day in the week after. Banks and city offices close for the whole holiday run. Cool Biz season starts on May 1, which means office workers in Kannai drop their ties, and no restaurant in the city will expect formal dress. Tipping is not practiced in restaurants or taxis. A Suica or PASMO card covers the Minatomirai Line, the city buses, and the Sea Bass water bus. FAQ
Is May a good time to visit Yokohama?
Yes, especially after Golden Week. May ranks fourth of the 12 months, behind November, October, and April: you get rose gardens and comfortable evenings, but budget for frequent rain.
What is the weather like in Yokohama in May?
Days sit in the low 20s Celsius (low 70s Fahrenheit), and evenings cool down enough that a light layer makes sense. Rain fronts come through often but usually clear within a day.
Is Yokohama crowded in May?
Only at the start. The national holiday week packs Chinatown, Yamashita Park, and the Red Brick Warehouse, but once it ends, weekday crowds in Minato Mirai and Yamate drop to some of the year's lowest levels.
Is May the rainy season in Yokohama?
Not officially. Kanto's tsuyu rainy season usually begins a few weeks later, and May rain arrives as separate fronts rather than the steady drizzle of tsuyu, even though the monthly total is the city's highest.
When do the roses bloom in Yokohama?
The Yamate and Yamashita Park rose gardens usually reach full color in the second half of May, so visitors arriving early in the month often find the beds still in bud.
