Is Varanasi safe?

Our read is that Varanasi tests your patience far more than it threatens your body. The hassle concentrates on the 2 km of riverfront between Dashashwamedh Ghat and Manikarnika Ghat. At Manikarnika, the main cremation ground, a man will likely introduce himself as a hospice volunteer and lead you to a balcony above the pyres, where you'll smell sandalwood and woodsmoke and feel the heat on your face from 10 metres away. Then comes the request for a donation to buy wood for poor families, often quoted at ₹500 a kilo. It is a scam, and Wikivoyage's safety section flags it too. Say no once, keep walking toward Scindia Ghat, and never hand a phone or camera to anyone who claims a photography fine.

After dark the picture changes at around 10pm. The Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat ends before 8pm in a clatter of bells and conch shells, the crowd keeping Godowlia Chowk busy for another two hours. Past that, the galis of Bengali Tola go quiet and poorly lit, with shutters down and stray dogs holding the corners. Solo women tell us the staring and occasional groping happen in the aarti crush and in those empty lanes, rarely on the open ghats by day. We'd book a room within 200 metres of Assi Ghat, the calmer southern end, and be indoors before Bengali Tola empties. Autos and cycle rickshaws cannot enter the lanes, so ask your guesthouse to send someone to meet you at Godowlia or at the Assi road head. In July through September the monsoon river tends to swallow the lower steps, and the ghat-to-ghat walk becomes impossible.

What sends most visitors to Sir Sunderlal Hospital at Banaras Hindu University is unremarkable. Motorbikes push through lanes 1.5 metres wide with horns blaring, and the stone underfoot is slick with cow dung and spilled chai. Don't swim in the Ganges or let boat spray near your mouth, since sewage still drains into the river along this stretch. Monkeys around Kashi Vishwanath Temple snatch food and glasses, and a bite or scratch from one, or from a street dog, means rabies shots the same day. If you're alone, skip the bhang lassi sold near Godowlia: the dose is a guess, the effect can last 8 hours, and you'd be walking home through that maze with nobody watching your bag. Transit is where a solo arrival gets squeezed. From Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport at Babatpur, about 25 km out, the prepaid taxi counter tends to charge ₹900 to ₹1,200, roughly $9 to $13 at the mid-October 2026 rate of about 95.8 rupees to the dollar. Drivers at Varanasi Junction might insist your hotel has flooded or closed, which in most cases is a steer toward a commission guesthouse. If you want company on the trip, the 5am Subah-e-Banaras gathering at Assi Ghat and a small-group dawn boat tour are the easiest places to meet other travellers, and a shared boat sidesteps the solo markup on a private rowboat. Take insurance with medical evacuation, because serious cases often get transferred to Delhi, around 800 km away.
