Where should I stay in Varanasi?

Assi Ghat, at the southern tip of Varanasi's 6-kilometer riverfront, is the right answer for a first visit. The lanes behind it are narrower than you expect, maybe 2 meters across, but they connect to guesthouses and rooftop cafes where you can sit with a 40-rupee chai and watch the Ganges turn copper at sunset. Noise drops off here compared to the central ghats. You will still hear temple bells before dawn and the occasional motorcycle squeezing past, but sleep is possible. A clean double room with AC and a river view runs ₹1,500-4,500 per night ($16-47 at current rates). Ganpati Guest House and Palace on Ganges are the two properties travelers mention most, both on or near the ghat steps. The trade-off is distance. Dashashwamedh Ghat, where the nightly Ganga Aarti draws 3,000-plus spectators, is a 25-minute walk north along the ghats or a 10-minute e-rickshaw ride through the old city lanes.

If the old city's density feels like too much, Lanka, the commercial strip outside the south gate of Banaras Hindu University, offers wider roads, ATMs that work reliably, and hotels with actual parking. Rooms at Hotel Surya or Ramada Varanasi run ₹3,000-7,000 ($31-73). You lose the ghat-side atmosphere entirely, and a cycle-rickshaw to Assi Ghat takes 15 minutes. The Cantonment area, 6 kilometers north near Varanasi Junction railway station, is where the Taj Nadesar Palace sits on 40 acres of Mughal-era gardens. Rates start around ₹19,000 ($200) and it feels like a different city. Cool marble floors, jasmine in the courtyard, silence. Worth noting, the Cantonment puts you 30-40 minutes from the ghats by auto-rickshaw at ₹150-200 each way. That commute gets old by day three.

BrijRama Palace, built in the 1800s directly on Darbhanga Ghat, is the best ghat-side heritage hotel. Rooms start at ₹12,000 ($125), and you fall asleep to the sound of water lapping against stone steps. The restoration kept the original carved-stone facade and added modern plumbing. Mind you, the lanes leading to it are too narrow for cars, so porters carry your bags the last 200 meters. That is normal here, not a red flag. Hotels directly behind Dashashwamedh Ghat tend to be overpriced for what they deliver. The 4:30am loudspeaker from the aarti platform carries through every wall, and touts cluster at every ghat entrance. Booking timing matters. October through March is peak season, when temperatures drop from 30°C in August to 15-20°C in December and January. Room rates rise 40-60% during Dev Deepawali, usually in November, when a million oil lamps line the ghats. Book 6-8 weeks ahead for that window. Monsoon months, July through September, bring sticky 75% humidity and afternoon showers, but also the lowest rates and the fewest crowds. The Ganges tends to run high and brown, and some lower ghat steps disappear underwater. If you arrive at Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport, expect a 25-kilometer, 45-minute ride to Assi Ghat costing ₹400-600 by prepaid taxi.
