What should I avoid in Dubrovnik?

Walking the Walls of Dubrovnik at 11am in July is the worst first-day mistake you can make here. The 1,940-metre circuit has almost no shade, the limestone throws heat back at your shins, and cruise groups from Gruž pour through Pile Gate between 9am and 1pm. Go at the 8am opening, or after 5pm, when the stone cools and swifts scream around Minčeta Tower. Tickets currently cost about €40, roughly $45 at the 15 October 2026 rate, which stings, but keep yours: it also gets you into Fort Lovrijenac the same day, and most visitors don't discover that until they've paid twice. The route is one-way and runs anticlockwise, so you can't double back for a missed photo.

Skip any restaurant on Prijeko where a man stands out front with a laminated photo menu. Prijeko runs parallel to Stradun on its north side, its black risotto often tops €25, and much of it is cooked in batches for the cruise lunch rush. By noon the stepped alleys smell of old frying oil. Eat one lane further in. Kopun, on Poljana Ruđera Boškovića below the Jesuit Stairs, cooks capon with figs, a dish from the old Dubrovnik Republic, and Lucín Kantun on Od Svetog Dominika serves small plates of octopus and Pelješac cheese. A cappuccino on Stradun itself can cost €5, while a café by the Gruž market charges about half that.

The Srđ cable car is worth riding, but not at sunset in August, when the line at the lower station on Ulica kralja Petra Krešimira IV can run an hour. Ride it at 9am, or hike the switchback trail up from Jadranska cesta, which takes about 45 minutes on loose gravel with no shade and no water on the way. Game of Thrones walking tours are the most overrated thing you can buy here. The Jesuit Stairs look the same without a guide reciting episode numbers. Banje Beach charges for the loungers in front of the best water, and by 2pm its pebbles burn bare feet. Take the Lokrum ferry from the Old Port instead. Check the time of the last boat back, because ferries stop before dark and nobody may stay on Lokrum overnight.

Dubrovnik Airport sits in Čilipi, 20 km south of the city. Unless your group is three or more, skip the taxi touts in arrivals: the Platanus shuttle bus meets flights, stops at Pile Gate, and costs around €10, while a taxi runs €40 to €60. The blue Euronet ATMs clustered around Pile Gate add fees and offer to bill you in dollars at a poor rate, so choose to be charged in EUR, or use a bank ATM such as Zagrebačka banka. Croatia has used the euro since January 2023, so any booth still quoting kuna is out of date. At 7pm on 15 October 2026 it was 20.5°C but felt like 17.8°C, and October rain makes Stradun's polished limestone as slick as wet soap, so wear rubber soles.
