What's the must-see thing in Dubrovnik?

Enter at Pile Gate, where the one-way circuit starts climbing toward Minčeta Tower at the northern corner. The walkway is narrow, often less than 2 metres wide, and unshaded for most of the route. In late June the stone radiates heat you can feel through your shoes by mid-morning. From the highest section, about 25 metres above Stradun, brighter terracotta tiles mark roofs rebuilt after the 1991 shelling. There is no re-entry once you step off. Bring water. Lokrum Island sits 600 metres offshore, visible the whole way along the seaward stretch. Ferries leave the Old Port every half hour in summer for roughly €20 round-trip. The island is car-free, covered in Aleppo pine, and still home to a Benedictine monastery founded in 1023, now partially ruined. Peacocks wander the botanical garden. The Mrtvo More, a small saltwater lake on the southern end connected to the sea through underwater caves, stays warmer than the open water and is likely the best swimming spot near the Old Town.

Inside the walls, Rector's Palace on Pred Dvorom street is the strongest single building. The atrium stays cool even when the city hits 30°C. Stone columns frame a space that functioned as the seat of the Dubrovnik Republic for over 400 years, and you can still read the Latin inscription that forbade rectors from leaving during their one-month term. The palace now holds the city museum, with entry at about €15. Across the square, Sponza Palace served as the customs house and mint from the 16th century. It now houses the Memorial Room of the Dubrovnik Defenders, a small exhibition of photographs and personal effects from the 1991 siege. The room is free, takes 10 minutes, and tends to be the moment when the city's recent history stops being abstract. Inside the Memorial Room, you'll smell old paper and floor wax. It is quiet in a way the rest of the Old Town is not. The Cathedral, rebuilt after the earthquake of 1667, holds a Titian polyptych, though the dim interior and €5 entry might feel steep for 5 minutes of viewing.

Sea kayaking along the outside of the walls has become one of Dubrovnik's defining activities. Most outfitters launch from Banje Beach, east of Ploče Gate, and a 3-hour guided paddle runs 40-50€ per person, typically with a swimming stop at one of the sea caves beneath the cliffs. The route passes beneath Fort Bokar and along the base of Fort Lovrijenac, the freestanding fortress on a 37-metre cliff that doubled as the Red Keep in Game of Thrones. Lovrijenac is worth the climb on foot too. Entry is typically included with the walls ticket, and the rooftop terrace overlooks Pile Gate and the rocky cove below. For drinks after, Buža Bar sits on the cliffs outside the southern wall. You reach it through a gap in the stone marked by a small hand-painted sign near St. Ignatius Church. A beer costs 8-10€, steep by Croatian standards, but you're perched on a limestone shelf about 15 metres above the water with nothing between you and the horizon.

Eating inside the Old Town walls tends to cost 30-50% more than the same dishes in Lapad or Gruž. That said, Gundulićeva Poljana square hosts a morning market where vendors sell Pelješac pršut, Pag island cheese, and seasonal figs for a few euros. For a sit-down meal, the konoba-style restaurants on the side streets between Stradun and the southern walls serve crni rižot, the squid-ink risotto that stains your teeth and tastes like the entire Adriatic concentrated in one bowl. A plate runs 15-20€ at most Old Town spots. Oysters from Mali Ston, about an hour north on the Pelješac peninsula, appear on most seafood menus at roughly €2 each. Mind you, the Old Town's charm is partly the limestone alleys at dusk, when restaurant tables spill onto the stone and the smell of grilled fish mixes with jasmine from the windowsill planters above.

Dubrovnik Airport sits 22 kilometres south near Čilipi. The shuttle to Pile Gate takes about 40 minutes and costs roughly €8 one-way. Taxis quote 35-45€ for the same trip. If you're staying in Lapad or Babin Kuk, the hotel neighborhoods about 4 kilometres northwest of the Old Town, local buses on lines 4 and 6 reach Pile Gate in 15 minutes for under €2. Lapad has a tree-lined promenade along the bay, quieter restaurants with lower prices, and a pebble beach at Uvala Lapad that stays warm enough for swimming into late October. It feels like a different city. Slower, a bit scruffy in a good way. The cable car to Srđ at 412 metres costs €25 round-trip, but summer queues of 30 minutes or more eat into limited time. The Old Town itself is compact enough to walk end-to-end in 12 minutes along Stradun.
