The single most important weekly pattern in Dubrovnik is the cruise ship schedule. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday are the heaviest days, when 2-4 ships dock at Gruž port and funnel passengers through the Pile Gate by 10am. The Stradun, that 300-meter limestone promenade, goes from empty at 7am to shoulder-to-shoulder by noon. The midday air smells like sunscreen and warm stone. Monday and Friday are often single-ship days. Saturday and Sunday are lighter still, though weekend bus arrivals from Split fill some of the gap.

Be inside the Old Town walls before 8am. At that hour the streets belong to residents and Dubrovnik's considerable stray cat population. The Onofrio fountain at the western entrance runs cool drinking water, and you might catch a fisherman sorting his catch at the Old Port. By 9am the first tour groups form on the Stradun. The whole place flips after 6pm, when the limestone radiates stored heat underfoot, restaurants along Boškovićeva send out the smell of grilled squid, and fading sun turns the walls copper. The Dubrovnik Summer Festival spans roughly 45 days each year, with performances most evenings at Fort Lovrijenac and the Rector's Palace courtyard. Popular shows tend to sell out 3-4 days ahead.

Prijeko street runs parallel to the Stradun and has the highest restaurant density inside the walls. It is also the most tourist-trapped strip in Dubrovnik. Hawkers with laminated menus stand outside from about 11am. Skip it for dinner. Walk 2 minutes south to Od Puča street for places like Barba, where a portion of crni rižot, black risotto stained with cuttlefish ink, costs around 12-15 EUR. Thursday and Friday evenings, the wine bars along Od Margarite fill with local professionals winding down the week. Sunday is the quietest night for eating inside the walls. The Gruž market, about 3 km northwest near the bus station, operates every morning but peaks on Saturday, when Konavle valley farmers bring figs and the hard sheep's cheese you'll smell from two stalls away.

Summer in Dubrovnik means afternoon highs around 33-35°C, with humidity often in the 80s. Thunderstorms along the Dalmatian coast can build fast, sometimes with hail. Banje Beach, about 200 meters from the Ploče Gate, fills by mid-morning and charges 30-40 EUR for a pair of sunbeds in peak season. Locals prefer Šulić Beach below the old Belvedere, or the 15-minute ferry from the Old Port to Lokrum Island, where rocky coves on the southern shore stay cooler under Aleppo pine cover. Monday is Dubrovnik's quiet day inside the walls. Several museums close or run shorter hours, including the Maritime Museum in St. John's Fortress. The Dubrovnik Cathedral, rebuilt from 1670 after an earthquake leveled the earlier structure, stays open daily. St. Saviour Church, standing since 1528, hosts small art exhibitions on an irregular weekly schedule. The City Walls walk is a 2 km circuit that currently costs around 35 EUR and opens at 8am year-round.
