Is Dubrovnik family-friendly?

The Old Town sits inside 25-metre walls built in the 13th century, and every gate involves stairs. Pile Gate drops 15 steep limestone steps to the Stradun, and that polished stone turns slippery when it rains. If your child is under 3, leave the stroller at the apartment and bring a carrier. The Stradun itself is flat, roughly 300 metres end to end, but every side street climbs vertically into residential lanes. Buža Gate on the north side has the fewest steps (about 8), making it your best entry point with a tired 4-year-old on your shoulders. Changing tables exist at the public toilet near the Rector's Palace and inside the Hilton Imperial lobby, which sits 50 metres outside Pile Gate. That is the complete list for the walled city. Mind you, the newer neighbourhoods of Lapad and Babin Kuk are flat, paved, and stroller-friendly.

Lokrum Island is the single best family outing in Dubrovnik. Ferries leave the Old Port every 30 minutes from April through November, cost roughly €24 return for a family of four (2 adults + 2 children under 12), and the crossing takes 15 minutes over water that smells of salt and engine oil. Kids scatter immediately toward the peacocks that strut along gravel paths, the shallow saltwater lake called Mrtvo More, and the rocky swimming spots with metal ladders into water about 2 metres deep. The temperature under the Aleppo pines drops 2-3°C compared to the reflected heat bouncing off Old Town limestone. Bring water shoes for the rocky entry points. The last ferry back leaves at 7pm in peak season. One café near the Benedictine monastery ruins sells sandwiches for €6-8 and gelato scoops for €3.

The city walls walk costs €35 for adults, free for children under 5, half-price for ages 5-17. The route covers 1,940 metres with zero shade and unguarded drops of 10+ metres on the sea side. Under age 7, skip it. Above 7, go at 8am when the gates open or after 5pm when the limestone cools enough to touch with bare hands. The Dubrovnik Aquarium inside St. John's Fortress (€12 adult, €7 child) takes about 25 minutes, which is the right duration for ages 3-8. Tanks of Adriatic species sit in dim, cool stone vaults that feel 10°C below the outside air. The Srđ cable car runs every 30 minutes to 412 metres, with clean toilets and a small café at the summit. No guardrails at the cliff edge near the Imperial Fort museum. Hold hands up there.

Kid food runs cheap in Dubrovnik's Old Town. Pizza costs €8-12, pasta €10-15. Poklisar on the harbour wall serves plain spaghetti with butter for €8 if you ask. The morning fruit market at Gundulićeva Poljana (closed Sundays) sells figs and cherries in June for €3-4 per kilo, and the smell of ripe stone fruit fills that small square by 9am. The best family rhythm in summer involves the Old Town before 10am (cruise ships start disgorging 3,000-8,000 passengers at 9:30), beach or Lokrum through midday heat, and the Stradun again around 5pm when shade returns and warm limestone releases stored heat underfoot. Copacabana Beach in Babin Kuk, 3km from Old Town on bus route 6, has gradual sandy entry, a changing room, outdoor showers, and chicken nuggets at the snack bar for €6. Trsteno Arboretum, 20km northwest (bus 12, 35 minutes), has shaded paths, a Renaissance fountain, and 600-year-old plane trees that kids can't wrap their arms around.
