Is Santorini family-friendly?

Santorini scores 5.8/10 for family friendliness (see the TTDI Family-Friendliness Index), and the caldera cliffs are why. Fira, Imerovigli and Oia are built as stairways that defeat strollers. Base yourself on the flat east coast at Kamari or Perissa instead and the island works well for kids aged 5 and up. The two best days out are shaded Akrotiri and the warm Palea Kameni springs.

Santorini splits in two for strollers. Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli and Oia sit 200 to 300 metres above the sea on the caldera rim, their lanes a network of whitewashed stairs with almost no ramps, which means in those villages you will carry a stroller more often than you push it. Bring a soft carrier for anyone under 3. The east coast is a different island: Kamari has a flat, paved seafront promenade more than a kilometre long, lined with tavernas and ice-cream counters, while Perissa and Perivolos share a level beach road behind the black sand. KTEL buses connect both beaches to the Fira bus station, but from June to September they run packed and drivers expect your stroller folded before you climb the steps. Santorini also has very few taxis for its summer crowds, so a pre-booked transfer with your own car seat, or a rental car booked weeks ahead with one fitted, beats queueing at the airport rank at 6 pm with a sleeping toddler.

Hotel listings mislead families most on this island. A cave suite in Oia or Imerovigli usually means one double bed under a vaulted ceiling, an unfenced plunge pool two steps from the door, and 80 to 150 steps down from the road with your luggage. Many caldera hotels set a minimum guest age of 12 or 13, and that rule tends to sit in the policies tab rather than the headline. Families do better in Kamari, Perissa or the inland village of Megalochori. Before booking, check the listing for three things: two separate bedrooms or a double plus two singles, a kitchenette with a hob and fridge, and a washing machine or laundry service. The beachfront studio complexes in Kamari often tick all three, and most have a shared pool and a minimarket on the same street. On Trip.com, filter for family rooms and kitchens, then read the bed breakdown. A quadruple room in Santorini can mean a double and a sofa bed in the same 25 square metres.

A day shaped around children aged 4 to 10 works best if you start early. The morning belongs to Akrotiri, the Bronze Age town buried by the eruption roughly 3,600 years ago, and the whole excavation sits under a vast roof that keeps it shaded and noticeably cooler than the gravel car park outside, with walkways level enough for a stroller. Adult entry is €20 (about $22.45), and under-18s enter free at Greek state sites. For lunch and a nap, come back to Kamari, where tavernas serve tomatokeftedes, the island's crisp tomato fritters that taste of sweet tomato and mint, alongside plain grilled chicken that picky eaters accept. The gentler afternoon starts at Kamari beach after 5 pm, once the black pebbles have cooled from scorching to warm underfoot, and from there Cinema Kamari, an open-air garden screen running from roughly May to October, with films starting around 9 pm. The reading at Fira on the night of 20 October 2026 was 17.3°C and clear, which makes late October the gentlest month for this schedule.

The Museum of Prehistoric Thera in Fira holds Akrotiri's frescoes and a tiny gold ibex figurine that kids tend to remember, and since it is air-conditioned, 45 minutes is plenty for under-10s. Volcano boat trips leave from the Old Port below Fira. On Nea Kameni, the crater walk is a loose gravel climb of about 30 minutes each way with no shade at all, the air smelling of sulphur and the rock hot enough to feel through thin soles. Children aged 6 and up usually manage it on a morning departure. At Palea Kameni, the boat stops and you swim about 50 metres through deep water to the rust-orange springs, which feel warmer than the open sea. Under-8s need lifejackets for that swim. A half-day morning trip booked on Viator or GetYourGuide with free cancellation absorbs a bad night's sleep. For allergies, Greek pastries such as baklava lean hard on walnuts and sesame, so the phrase χωρίς ξηρούς καρπούς (without nuts) is worth writing on a card.

Skip these with kids. Oia's sunset draws thousands onto the castle walls and stepped lanes from about 7 pm in summer, and a stroller becomes a liability in that crush. The 10 km Fira to Oia cliff path has no shade and long exposed drops, so leave it to teenagers who set off at dawn. Skip the donkey ride up the 587 steps from the Old Port: the steps are slick with dung and smell of it by noon. Take the Fira cable car instead, which costs roughly €6 one way for adults and takes folded strollers, though when cruise ships are anchored the queue for the ride up can pass 45 minutes. Red Beach near Akrotiri has a history of rockfalls and its path is regularly signed closed, so approach no further than the lookout. Quad and ATV rentals cause a steady run of injuries on the island's narrow roads. Ancient Thera sits on the 360-metre ridge of Mesa Vouno, reached by a hairpin road, and at midday in July its exposed ruins are too hot for children under 7.

6/10 family-friendliness rating

Streets are uneven; baby carriers travel better than strollers.

Child safety notes

Caldera hotels often have unfenced plunge pools and low terrace walls above long drops, so ask for photos of the railings before you book. The black sand at Perissa and Kamari burns bare feet by midday in July, so pack water shoes. The meltemi winds in July and August can make sea swims rough. Santorini General Hospital is in Karterados, near Fira, and serious paediatric cases are transferred to Crete or Athens.
