Where to stay
Fira for a first visit. It is the island's only bus hub, 5 minutes on foot from the Archaeological Museum and 8 from the cable car, with caldera-facing rooms at €90-220 per night. Firostefani, 10 minutes north on foot, gives the same view with less midnight bar noise. Budget travelers should look at Kamari's black sand beach, where doubles start around €40.

Must-see
Akrotiri, the Bronze Age Minoan settlement buried under volcanic tephra around 1600 BC. The same eruption collapsed Santorini's center into the caldera. Unlike Pompeii, no bodies were found. Food culture
Santorini's food culture builds on volcanic-soil ingredients found nowhere else in Greece. The best cooking happens at inland tavernas away from the caldera sunset strip, where prices drop by half and the kitchen works harder.

Airport to city
Santorini (Thira) Airport (JTR) sits 6 km southeast of Fira. Pre-book a private transfer (€15-40, 15-25 minutes to most hotels). The KTEL bus to Fira costs €1.80 and runs every 30 minutes May through October. Skip the taxi queue. Santorini has only about 25 licensed cabs for the entire island, and peak-season waits at JTR regularly pass 45 minutes.

Cost per day
Budget travelers spend €55-65 ($65-75) per day on Santorini with a hostel dorm in Perissa and gyros meals. Midrange runs €130-160 ($150-185) with a Fira hotel and sit-down dinners. Luxury hits €400+ ($460+) for caldera suites in Oia. The island is the priciest in the Cyclades, and caldera-side villages charge 30-50% more than beach towns on the southeast coast.
