Where should I stay in Santorini?

Fira sits at the center of Santorini's bus network. Routes to Oia, Kamari, Perissa, and Akrotiri all converge at a single square beside the taxi rank. No other village on Santorini connects to all four coasts. The island has no rail, taxis thin out after 10pm, and rental-car parking in caldera villages ranges from difficult to nonexistent. From Fira's main pedestrian street you can walk to the Archaeological Museum of Thera (open since 1960) in 5 minutes and reach the cable car to the old port in 8. Sit on any caldera-edge terrace and the cliff drops over 200 meters to the water. Caldera-facing rooms in Fira run €90-220 per night in September, about $105-255 at the current rate. Rooms on the inland side go for €50-80, still a 2-minute walk from the view. The trade-off is noise. Bars along the caldera path pump music past midnight, and in July through August cruise passengers between 10am and 4pm pack the narrow walkways until you can smell sunscreen on the person ahead of you.

Firostefani starts 10 minutes north of Fira on foot along the caldera-rim path. The volcanic-edge panorama is the same, but foot traffic drops by half once you pass the last Fira cocktail bar. Three Bells of Fira, the blue-domed church from every Santorini postcard (built 1757), stands at the boundary between the two villages. Hotels here run €120-280, about 20% above equivalent Fira rooms but with noticeably less noise after 9pm. Another 15 minutes along the same stone path brings you to Imerovigli, the highest settlement on the caldera rim. Imerovigli has maybe 8 restaurants total. The Skaros Rock trail works well before noon, when temperatures are still under 30°C. Mind you, neither Firostefani nor Imerovigli has its own bus stop on most routes. You'll walk back to Fira's square for connections to the beaches or the airport. That walk is pleasant in October's 20°C breeze but punishing in July when the stone path holds the 35°C heat and shade disappears.

Oia sits 11 kilometers northwest of Fira. The sunset from the Byzantine castle ruins draws over 1,000 people to a single overlook on summer evenings, and by 6pm every ledge is taken. White cave houses descend the cliff below the main walking path, bougainvillea spills over blue-painted doors, and the late-afternoon light turns Oia's volcanic stone a warm copper. The Museum of Ancient Greek, Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Instruments (opened 1984) occupies a restored captain's house near the path. Caldera-facing rooms start around €200 in September and climb past €500 in July and August. You're paying for what might be the most photographed stretch of coastline in the Aegean. But Oia has limited bus service from Fira (roughly hourly, 25 minutes), few budget tavernas, and the nearest swim at Ammoudi Bay requires a steep 300-step descent. Pre-book a return taxi before sunset or you'll wait 45 minutes at the small stand near the parking lot.

If the caldera view isn't worth €150 a night to you, Kamari and Perissa on Santorini's east coast bring rates down to €40-70 for a clean double with air conditioning and a balcony. Both villages line long stretches of black volcanic sand that holds heat fast. By noon in summer the sand surface can hit 60°C, so pack proper beach sandals. Kamari has the more developed waterfront, with a row of fish tavernas and an open-air cinema that screens English-language films against a cliff face on warm nights. Perissa tends to pull a younger crowd, with beach bars where the bass carries until 2am and a cold Mythos costs €3.50. Buses from both villages to Fira run every 30 minutes until roughly 11pm, a 20-minute ride at €1.80 each way. What you trade is the caldera sunset from your room. The swimming is better than anything on the west coast, and the nightly savings fund 2 or 3 good dinners at Fira's caldera-edge tavernas.

Book caldera-view rooms 6 to 8 weeks ahead for July through September. Santorini's season runs later than most Cycladic islands. September still holds around 25°C with warm sea temperatures, fewer cruise calls, and lower rates. October works too, though some smaller hotels close by the 20th and ferry schedules from Athinios port thin to 2 or 3 daily departures. First-timers tend to underestimate Santorini's JTR airport, which has a single runway, no jet bridges, and a terminal about the size of a large cafe. Arrival means walking across hot tarmac. The taxi rank handles maybe 15 cars, so pre-book a hotel transfer or you might wait 30 minutes with no shade.
