How do I get around Santorini?

The KTEL bus network runs every route through Fira's central station on 25th Martiou. Buses head to Oia (25 minutes, 1.80 EUR), Kamari beach (15 minutes), Perissa (20 minutes), and Akrotiri (30 minutes). The Fira-to-Oia line runs roughly every 20 minutes during summer, with the last bus around 23:00. From November through March, frequency drops to about one per hour. These are small air-conditioned coaches that fill within minutes after a cruise ship docks at the old port below Fira. If 3 ships are in that morning, you might wait for 2 full buses to pass before squeezing onto a third. Tickets come from the Fira station kiosk, or you pay the driver on board with exact EUR change. Worth noting, no bus route connects Kamari and Perissa directly. The trip from one to the other means backtracking through Fira, a 40-minute detour for 2 beaches that Mesa Vouno's 1.5 km of volcanic rock separates.

Santorini has roughly 25 licensed taxis for an island that receives over 2 million visitors a year. During July and August, phone waits run 30-45 minutes. After sunset in Fira that can stretch past an hour. There is no Uber. BEAT, Greece's local ride-hail app, technically covers Santorini, but driver supply is so thin outside Fira that the app seems nearly useless most days. Hotel front desks in Fira and Oia can usually arrange next-day pickups. Expect to pay 20-30 EUR for the Fira-to-Oia run, or 25-35 EUR from Athinios port to Oia. Meters exist, but drivers often quote flat rates from June through September. To be fair, a flat rate of 25 EUR between Fira and Oia sits close to what the meter would show. On a Saturday night in August, availability is the real constraint, not price.

ATV and scooter rentals line the main roads in Fira and Perissa, starting around 25-35 EUR per day for a 50cc quad. They are also Santorini's leading source of tourist injuries. The island's roads are narrow, poorly lit after dark, and shared with full-size tour buses that leave about 30 cm of clearance on the caldera-side curves. If you have never ridden a motorbike at home, Santorini's cliff roads are not the place to start. A small car, a Fiat Panda or similar, runs 45-70 EUR per day in high season and handles the hairpin between Fira and Imerovigli without the emergency-room risk. Book at least 2 weeks ahead for July and August. Fuel stations sit in Fira and near Kamari. Parking in Oia is a genuine problem. The main lot fills by 10:00 most mornings, and the walk from overflow parking down to the village center crosses steep, loose gravel that stays hot underfoot well past noon.

Walking is the best way to move within Fira, Oia, or Imerovigli. The caldera footpath from Fira to Oia stretches about 10 km and takes 3-4 hours over loose pumice, dry dust, and sharp drops with no guardrails. Start before 08:00 in summer. By midday the exposed trail hits 35-40°C with zero shade for long stretches. Bring at least 2 liters of water. The pumice-and-gravel surface shreds sandals within the first km, so closed-toe shoes matter. Inside the villages, marble-paved lanes are smooth but steep, with staircases connecting the upper streets to the caldera rim. At Fira's old port, a cable car runs every 20 minutes for 6 EUR one way, carrying passengers up the 220-meter cliff in about 3 minutes. The alternative is 588 stone steps shared with working donkeys. The smell of dung hangs thick in the summer heat, and the animals have right of way on a path barely 1.5 meters wide. The cable car saves you 20 minutes and the donkey gauntlet.

Santorini's airport (JTR) sits 6 km southeast of Fira. A KTEL bus connects the two for 1.80 EUR when running, but the bus stop is a 200-meter walk from the terminal exit, unmarked and easy to miss. Look left past the car rental counters. Athinios port, where ferries from Piraeus and Crete dock, lies 10 km south of Fira, with a bus ticket at 2.50 EUR. Both routes stop by midnight, so late arrivals need a pre-booked taxi or hotel shuttle. Most hotels above the 3-star tier offer port and airport pickup if you email 48 hours ahead, sometimes free, sometimes 15-25 EUR. One email saves a 45-minute taxi queue at the dock. If you land at Athinios at 22:30 without a ride arranged, you share the pier with 800 other ferry passengers who all need one of the island's handful of cabs.
