How do I get from the airport to Santorini?

JTR is a single-runway airport with no jet bridges. You walk across open tarmac, which in mid-September means dry heat around 25°C and the meltemi wind that can gust hard enough to delay landings. The terminal feels like a repurposed warehouse, with two baggage carousels and a ceiling low enough that the noise of a hundred rolling suitcases bounces right back at you. Everything empties into a small arrivals hall where the KTEL bus stop sits to your left as you exit. The bus to Fira costs €1.80 (about $2.08 at current rates), takes 15 minutes, and runs roughly every 30 minutes from May through October. Schedules are loosely timed to flight arrivals, though a 20-minute wait is normal. It drops you at Fira's central bus station, the island's only transit hub. Connecting buses from there reach Oia in 25 minutes for the same fare, or the beach towns of Perissa and Kamari in about 20 minutes.

Santorini has roughly 25 licensed taxis for an island that received over 2 million visitors in 2024. In peak season, late June through early September, the taxi queue outside JTR regularly hits 30 to 60 minutes. Fixed fares run €20 to Fira, €25 to Imerovigli, and €35 to Oia. A €2 surcharge kicks in between midnight and 5am. If you land after 10pm, the KTEL bus likely isn't running, and you're left competing with every other late arrival for those 25 cars. Pre-booked private transfers solve this problem entirely. Expect €15-30 to Fira, €25-40 to Oia, with a driver holding your name on a sign inside the arrivals hall. Book at least 48 hours ahead in July and August. This is the right default for anyone with luggage and a hotel reservation outside Fira.

Renting a car at JTR works if you book ahead. Europcar, Sixt, and a handful of local agencies have desks in the terminal. Expect €40-70 per day in high season for a small automatic. The roads on Santorini are narrow, parking in Fira and Oia is scarce (the Fira public lot fills by 10am most summer mornings), and the caldera-side roads have hairpin turns with no guardrails above 300-meter drops that make your palms sweat. If your hotel is in Fira or Oia, skip the car for day one. If you're staying near Akrotiri, the Bronze Age excavation site on the island's southern tip, or in the beach towns of Kamari and Perissa, a car makes more sense because KTEL bus frequency drops sharply after 9pm. Fuel stations are scarce. The main one sits on the road between Fira and the airport, about 3 km from the terminal.

Fira's bus station smells like diesel and grilled corn from the vendor parked at its entrance. The place is loud and disorganized. Still, it is the single most useful spot on the island for getting anywhere without a car. Buses leave from numbered bays with handwritten destination signs in Greek and English. The schedule posted inside the kiosk is more reliable than Google Maps, which tends to lag behind seasonal route changes. Buy tickets at the kiosk window, not on board. The last bus to Oia leaves Fira around 11pm in summer. That cutoff moves earlier in shoulder months like October, sometimes to 9pm.
