When's the best time to visit Santorini in 2026?

May and early June are the sweet spot. The Aegean is warm enough for swimming at Perissa's black-sand beach by mid-May, when water temperatures reach about 20°C. Bougainvillea covers the stairways in Fira, and you can smell wild thyme drying on the volcanic hillside above Megalochori. Hotel rates in Oia run 40-60% below their August peak, and you can walk into a caldera-rim restaurant in Fira and sit down within five minutes, not the 45-minute queue you'd face in July. September is nearly as good. The sea is warmer, around 24°C, the meltemi wind that batters the island in August has calmed, and the light turns golden by 6pm. Tourist numbers have dropped enough that you can walk the caldera trail from Fira to Imerovigli without being funneled single-file behind selfie sticks. That said, some smaller tavernas start closing by late October.

July and August are when most people come, and when Santorini is at its worst for a first visit. Temperatures regularly hit 34°C with no shade on the caldera rim. The stone pathways in Oia absorb heat and radiate it back at ankle level, making the sunset walk feel like standing over a grill. Cruise ships unload 8,000 to 12,000 passengers daily at Athinios port, and most of them funnel into Fira and Oia between 10am and 4pm. A glass of local white that costs €8 in May goes for €14 at the same bar in August. The only real upside is guaranteed clear skies and the longest swimming hours. If you must come in peak summer, book accommodation in Pyrgos or Emporio, the inland villages where temperatures drop 2-3°C after dark and you can hear crickets instead of bar speakers.

The off-season runs from November through March. Santorini in winter is a different island. About half the hotels and restaurants in Oia close entirely, ferry service drops to one or two boats daily from Piraeus, and rain hits roughly 10-12 days per month in December and January. Temperatures sit around 10-14°C. The upside is real solitude. You can visit Akrotiri, the Bronze Age settlement buried by the Minoan eruption around 1600 BCE, with two or three other visitors in the entire site. The Museum of Prehistoric Thera in Fira, which opened in 2000, is uncrowded enough to spend a full hour with the wall paintings. Wind is the bigger problem. The northwesterlies in January can reach 60-70 km/h, closing ferry routes for days and making the caldera edge genuinely unpleasant. April is when things reopen, though you might find some beach bars at Kamari still shuttered until late in the month.

For timing specific experiences, the Three Bells of Fira, the blue-domed church built in 1757, photographs best in the 7am light of late September when no tour groups block the frame. Ancient Thera on Mesa Vouno sits at 396 metres and gets uncomfortably hot by midday from June onward. Visit in May or October when the hike up from Kamari takes 30 minutes without needing to stop for shade. The Assyrtiko grape harvest runs from mid-August through September, and several wineries on the Megalochori plateau offer tastings of the new vintage starting in October. Caldera boat tours to the volcanic hot springs at Nea Kameni run from April through October. Worth noting, the spring water at Palea Kameni stays around 35°C year-round, but the swim from the tour boat to the sulphur-stained rocks is a cold 50-metre crossing in open water.
