When's the best time to visit Segovia in 2026?

May is the month Segovia feels most itself. The meseta grass around the Monastery of Santa María del Parral, founded in 1447, turns a sharp green that will be burnt yellow by July. Afternoon temperatures at 1,002 metres settle around 20-22°C, warm enough for shirtsleeves but cool enough that the 25-minute uphill walk from the Aqueduct's Plaza del Azoguejo to the Alcázar doesn't leave you hunting for shade. The Titirimundi puppet festival, usually held in mid-May, fills the Plaza de la Merced and the courtyards off Calle Real with street performers and local families rather than tour-bus groups. Early June still holds these conditions. By mid-June the heat starts to arrive, and Madrid weekender traffic on the AVE from Chamartín picks up. A table at José María on Calle Cronista Lecea takes 10 minutes to get on a Tuesday in May. The same table in June needs a reservation.

October is Segovia's second window, and some locals prefer it. The heat has broken, settling at 16-18°C during the day, and the poplars along the Río Eresma below the Alcázar go golden. The Royal Palace of La Granja de San Ildefonso, 11 km south and built in 1721, still runs its fountain displays on select Wednesdays and weekends through mid-October. In August those fountain days draw thousands. By October you might share the gardens with 50 people. The smell of roasting chestnuts appears on carts near the Aqueduct by late October. Segovian restaurants shift fully into cochinillo season around this time, though to be fair, they never really leave it. The trade-off is shorter days. Sunset drops before 19:00 by month's end, cutting into the golden-hour view from the Mirador de la Pradera de San Marcos, the best free vantage point in the city.

July and August are when most visitors arrive, and when Segovia is at its worst for comfort. Afternoon temperatures on the exposed granite of Plaza Mayor reach 32-34°C. The Aqueduct, built around 200 AD from unmortared granite blocks, radiates stored heat well into the evening. The 25-minute walk uphill from Plaza del Azoguejo to the Alcázar, pleasant in May, turns punishing at 14:00 in August. Mind you, the altitude does something Madrid at 650 metres cannot. Evenings cool to 15-16°C, and dinner on a terrace along Calle Juan Bravo at 21:30 is comfortable. If summer is your only option, take an early AVE from Madrid Chamartín (27 minutes to Segovia-Guiomar station) and do the Aqueduct and Segovia Cathedral, built starting in 1525, before noon. The Museo de Segovia, open since 1842, fills the 14:00-17:00 dead hours.

Winter has one real draw. The Alcázar under fresh snow against a flat grey Castilian sky is one of the most photographed sights in the region. But December and January bring overnight lows of -2 to -4°C, and the granite streets of the Judería get icy after dark. Guadarrama National Park, established in 2013 and visible from the Alcázar's Torre de Juan II, closes its higher trails. La Vera Cruz church, the 12-sided Romanesque building across the valley, keeps reduced hours November through February. That said, winter is when you'll walk into Mesón de Cándido below the Aqueduct without a reservation, and hotel prices on Calle San Millán drop 30-40% from the May peak. A quarter-cochinillo at José María runs around €25-28 year-round. In January you eat it at a window table with the plaza to yourself.
