What are the best day trips from Segovia?

La Granja de San Ildefonso sits 11 km southeast of Segovia's old town, and the La Sepulvedana bus covers the route in about 25 minutes for around €2 each way. Philip V built this palace starting in 1721 because he missed Versailles, and it shows. The formal gardens spread across 146 hectares with more than 20 monumental fountains fed by gravity from the Peñalara peaks. The fountains run on select dates between April and October, often Wednesdays, Saturdays, and saint's days, though the schedule shifts year to year. Check the Patrimonio Nacional website before going. The palace interior takes about 90 minutes. The gardens need at least 2 hours if you want to reach the upper terraces where the crowds thin out. For couples, this splits well. One person lingers in the Sala de Lacas while the other walks the hornbeam-lined Carrera de Caballos, where you'll hear birdsong and running water instead of traffic. The town's signature dish is judiones de La Granja, giant white beans slow-cooked in a clay pot, served at nearly every restaurant around the Plaza de los Dolores for €12-15 as a starter.

Pedraza is 37 km northeast of Segovia, about 40 minutes by car. You'll likely need a rental since bus service runs only once or twice daily. This 13th-century walled village has a single gate, the Puerta de la Villa, and the whole place is maybe 400 meters end to end. The Plaza Mayor is one of the best-preserved medieval squares in Castilla y León, ringed by stone arcades where you can sit with a glass of Ribera del Duero and watch the afternoon go nowhere. That sounds boring. It isn't. On the first two Saturdays of July, Pedraza holds its Conciertos de las Velas, when the entire village goes dark and roughly 25,000 candles light the streets and windows. If your trip falls anywhere near early July, rearrange your plans for this. Tickets sell out weeks ahead at around €35-40. The rest of the year, Pedraza is still worth the drive for the lechazo, milk-fed lamb roasted in a wood-fired clay oven until the skin crisps and the meat falls off the bone. The Hoces del Río Duratón natural park, 58 km northeast near Sepúlveda, works when one of you wants fresh air and the other wants Romanesque churches. The 3 km walk from the parking area to San Frutos is flat and dry, so it's not a fitness test. That said, there's no shade and summer temperatures near Sepúlveda regularly hit 35°C by midday, so go early. Sepúlveda itself has 7 Romanesque churches within walking distance, and the restaurants in the old quarter serve a sopa castellana, garlic soup with a poached egg floating in it, that warms you through on cooler mornings. The drive back to Segovia through the meseta passes wheat fields turning gold in June and takes about 50 minutes on the SG-205.

Riofrío Palace sits 11 km south of Segovia and barely gets visitors, which is half the appeal for couples who want quiet. Isabel de Farnesio commissioned this hunting lodge in 1751 after Philip V died, and the deer park still has wild fallow deer grazing within sight of the entrance. Entry runs about €8, and you'll finish in 90 minutes, making it a good half-day pairing with a long lunch back in Segovia. Ávila is 67 km west, about an hour by car or by the Avanza bus from Segovia's estación de autobuses. The complete medieval walls run 2.5 km, and you can walk along the top for €5. Mind you, Ávila fills a full day on its own, and cramming it into a morning leaves you rushed. If one of you cares about Santa Teresa's 16th-century convents and the other doesn't, this is a natural place to split for a few hours. One walks the walls while the other sits in the Plaza del Mercado Grande with yemas de Santa Teresa, candied egg-yolk sweets at €4-5 a box, and a cortado.
