Florence in late April smells like wisteria. Daytime temperatures hover around 20°C in April, rising to 25°C by mid-May. The Uffizi Gallery, which has operated from the same Vasari-designed building since 1560, tends to be manageable before 10am on weekdays. Lines of 20 minutes, not the 90-minute waits of July. Trattoria Sostanza on Via del Porcellana still serves its butter-blistered chicken breast for about €18, and you might actually get a table at 12:30 without booking. The Arno runs higher in spring, a grey-green current under the Ponte Vecchio's medieval shopfronts that have stood there since 1335.

Mid-September through October is the other window. Highs drop from 30°C in early September to around 19°C by late October. March and November work if you accept trade-offs. March mornings start cold, around 6-8°C, and rain hits about 9 days that month. November brings fog that rolls up the Arno, which might sound unpleasant but gives the city a quality that photographs better than sunshine.
