Is Florence family-friendly?

Florence works well for families, though cobblestones and summer heat are the two things that will test your patience. The centro storico fits inside a roughly 2 km walking diameter, so most sites sit within a 15-minute walk of each other. Good news for tired legs. Bad news for stroller wheels. The streets are uneven pietra serena flagstone, and lightweight strollers rattle and jam in the gaps between stones. Bring your heaviest all-terrain model, or switch to a structured carrier for kids under 15 kg. The tramvia T1 line from Santa Maria Novella station to Scandicci has flat-boarding platforms, air conditioning, and room for wheels. But inside the old center, you are on foot over stone. Changing tables exist inside the Uffizi, at Palazzo Pitti, and at the Mercato Centrale food hall on Via dell'Ariento. Churches have no facilities.

The best family move in Florence is the Palazzo Vecchio children's program, run by MUS.E. Kids aged 4-7 get a costumed "Life at Court" workshop for about €4 per child, bookable 2 days ahead on the Palazzo Vecchio website. The "Secret Passages" tour works better for ages 8-14 and runs 75 minutes through hidden staircases and the Duke's private study for around €6. Museo Galileo on Piazza dei Giudici keeps science-minded kids occupied for a solid 90 minutes with working Galilean telescopes and hands-on pendulum demonstrations. Entry runs €12 adult, €8 for ages 6-18, free under 6. Boboli Gardens behind Palazzo Pitti give kids 4.5 hectares of gravel paths, stone grottos dripping with moss, and fountains to circle, at €10 per adult and free under 18. The antique carousel in Piazza della Repubblica costs €3 per ride. The piazza smells like espresso from the surrounding cafes, and the painted horses are worn smooth from decades of small hands.

Kid food is easier in Florence than in most Italian cities. Mercato Centrale's ground floor (open until 2 pm, closed Sundays) sells focaccia al rosmarino for €2-3 a slice, warm and crackly on top with oil-soft dough underneath. The upstairs food hall stays open until midnight with pizza, pasta, and gelato stations visible from a single floor, so you can split up with a picky eater. Trattoria kitchens will make pasta in bianco (butter and parmesan, no sauce) without hesitation. Say "senza sugo" if the waiter looks confused. For gelato bribes, Vivoli on Via Isola delle Stinche has been open since 1929 and charges €2.50 for a piccolo cup. La Carraia near Ponte alla Carraia does €1.50 cones that taste like cold sweetened cream with real pistachio, not the neon green dye version. Gluten-free pasta ("senza glutine") is standard at most sit-down restaurants in the center. Dairy-free gelato is rarer but available at Carapina on Via Lambertesca.

Skip the Duomo dome climb with anyone under 8. The 463 steps are narrow, steep, and lack railings in several sections. No strollers, no carriers, no exceptions. The Baptistery (founded 1059) is a better bet at that age. It takes about 15 minutes inside, and the golden ceiling mosaic keeps toddlers staring upward, mouths open. The Uffizi works for kids 10 and older if you pre-book a 9 am slot and commit to 90 minutes maximum. Children under 7 will be miserable in the long corridors. State museums in Italy are free for visitors under 18, which helps offset the roughly €25 adult Uffizi ticket with reservation fee. Afternoons in June and July hit 34-35°C with almost no shade in the piazzas. Plan for a return to your accommodation between 1 and 3 pm. The piazza has a small playground, and a plate of pasta in bianco at the surrounding trattorias runs €7-9.
