What's happening in Santiago this week?

Santiago runs on a fixed weekly pattern: the big state museums close on Mondays, weekday lunch is the main meal of the day, Thursday nights fill the bars of Bellavista and Barrio Italia, and on Sunday mornings several avenues close to cars. Spring mornings start cool and clear and warm up fast, so carry a layer you can take off by noon.

Monday catches out a lot of first-timers in Santiago. The Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, the Museo de la Memoria y los Derechos Humanos, the Museo Chileno de Arte Precolombino and the natural history museum in Quinta Normal all close that day, so if you arrive on a Monday, go up Cerro San Cristóbal or eat at the Mercado Central instead. From Tuesday to Friday the Centro is at work, and office crowds fill the menú del día counters around Paseo Ahumada between 1pm and 3pm. A set lunch of soup, a main and a small dessert usually costs CLP 7,000 to 9,000, roughly US$7 to US$9, and it's the best-value meal of a week in Santiago. Metro de Santiago charges its peak fare from 7am to 8:59am and from 6pm to 7:59pm, and in those hours Línea 1 between Baquedano and Los Leones is packed, warm and smells of wet wool on cool mornings. Book your museum time for 10am to noon on a Tuesday or Wednesday: at that hour the Bellas Artes galleries tend to hold only school groups and the echo of their footsteps on the marble.

Santiago eats late. Chileans take once, an early-evening spread of marraqueta bread, avocado and ham, around 7pm, and restaurants in Lastarria and Bellavista don't fill until about 9:30pm. Locals call Thursday juernes: by 11pm Calle Constitución in Bellavista and the bars along Avenida Italia are loud and full, and the smoke of grilled anticuchos drifts out of the patios. On Friday the crowd moves toward Providencia and Avenida Manuel Montt. The Metro stops running around 11pm on weeknights, so a late night in Bellavista ends in an Uber or Cabify, which tends to cost CLP 5,000 to 8,000 back to Providencia. Santiago scores 5.8/10 for solo-traveler safety (see the TTDI Solo-Safety Index), and the usual incident is a phone snatched near Plaza de Armas, Barrio Brasil or the Bellavista bar strip after midnight. Keep your phone in a front pocket on the walk out of Calle Pío Nono.

Saturday morning is for markets. La Vega Central sits across the Río Mapocho from the Mercado Central and is cheapest before 11am, when the aisles smell of cilantro, damp cardboard, and ripe chirimoya and a kilo of in-season fruit costs under CLP 2,000. Skip the seafood restaurants at the front of the Mercado Central, where staff pull you in off the aisle, and eat at the small counters inside La Vega instead. The Persa Biobío flea market runs Friday to Sunday, south of the Centro. Sunday changes the pace of the Centro: the CicloRecreoVía closes stretches of Avenida Andrés Bello and other avenues to cars from about 9am to 2pm, the Metro opens later around 8am, and many restaurants in the Centro stay shut. Families drive to Viña del Mar or up the Cajón del Maipo, and the drive back into the city on Ruta 68 usually jams after 5pm. Colo-Colo play home football at the Estadio Monumental and Universidad Católica at the Claro Arena. Check the events list on this page for this week's fixtures.

In spring and summer, the gap between morning and afternoon temperatures in Santiago is what to plan a day around. When this page was last checked, the 8am reading was 14.6°C and clear, with 77% humidity; spring afternoons usually reach the low to mid 20s. The morning after a rare shower is the one to use: the air clears, and the snow on the Andes stands out sharply behind the Gran Torre Costanera. Take the funicular up Cerro San Cristóbal from Calle Pío Nono before 10am that day. By 3pm the paving on Plaza de Armas is hot underfoot, so see the Catedral Metropolitana and the pre-Columbian collection in the cooler mid-morning. At the last rate check, one US dollar bought about CLP 980, so a CLP 10,000 note is worth a little over US$10.
