Is Split safe?

We count Split among the calmer Adriatic ports for anyone travelling alone, because the things worth planning around are crowds, alcohol, and sun rather than crime. Pickpockets work Diocletian's Palace: Peristil square, the Vestibule passage, and the Bronze Gate off the Riva funnel cruise-ship groups into lanes barely three metres wide, roughly 9am to 1pm in July and August. Under the Cathedral of Saint Domnius bell tower, where everyone stops to look up, zip your daypack and wear it on your front. The Pazar green market outside the Silver Gate follows the same pattern on Saturday mornings, with the smell of figs and fried sardines and a lot of elbows. Street robbery in Split is rare, and Croatian police patrol the Riva on foot late into the night, with the limestone paving still warm underfoot at midnight in August.

Inside the palace walls the lanes stay lit and full of people until about 1am, and solo women tend to describe the walk home along the Riva, or up through the quiet stone alleys of Veli Varoš, as easy. Bačvice is the exception: the clubs above the beach draw stag groups and festival crowds, and fights and groping after 2am are the complaint we hear most often there. The Ultra Europe weekend at Stadion Poljud in July is the worst stretch of the year. From Bačvice, walk home along the lit waterfront toward the ferry port and the Riva, about 15 minutes, rather than through the dark backstreets of Firule. Split also fines people for drinking in public and for walking bare-chested in the historic centre, so the loudest crowds gather at Bačvice and not under the palace arcades.

Split is manageable solo. The Pleso shuttle meets flights at Split Airport, about 25 km west near Kaštela, and drops you at the bus station beside the ferry port for around €8 (about $9); city bus 37 covers the same road more slowly. At the arrivals kerb, unlicensed drivers sometimes quote €60 or more for a ride that Bolt or Uber prices at roughly half that, so we'd book in the app before you collect your bag. Jadrolinija and Krilo catamarans to Hvar and Brač leave from Gat Sv. Duje, where touts on the quay sell rooms and boat trips; the official ticket kiosks are the safer buy.

The Adriatic carries its own risks. Sea urchins cover the rocks at Kašjuni and Kaštelet, so pack water shoes. Marjan's forest trails have no lighting, afternoons there can reach 35°C, and summer fire bans apply, so climb the Vidilica steps from Varoš before 10am with two litres of water. KBC Split runs its emergency department at Firule, a 10-minute taxi ride from the Riva; police answer on 192, ambulance on 194 and sea rescue on 195, and 112 connects to all three in English.
