How do I get from the airport to Split?

Split Airport sits in Kaštela, 24 km west of Diocletian's Palace. The airport shuttle bus departs from the curb outside arrivals, timed to incoming flights, and drops you at the main bus station on Obala Kneza Domagoja. That's a 5-minute walk from the old town. The ride takes about 30 minutes along the coastal road skirting Kaštela Bay and costs around €6 from the driver or the small counter beside the stop. Croatia adopted the euro in January 2023, so there's no currency exchange to worry about on arrival.

Uber and Bolt both operate at SPU, and a ride to the Palace area runs €20-28 depending on demand. That's the better option if you have heavy luggage or a hotel in Varoš, the hillside neighborhood west of the old town where streets are too narrow for a bus to reach. Licensed taxis at the rank outside arrivals run metered fares and should land around €35-40 to central Split. The ones to watch are unlicensed guys who approach you inside the terminal quoting a 'fixed fare' of €50-60. Roughly double the real cost. If you take a taxi from the rank, confirm the meter is on before pulling away.

Local bus 37, operated by Promet Split, also passes the airport for about €2. It stops through every settlement in Kaštela, so expect 45-50 minutes. That route is more useful if you're staying in Trogir, which sits 7 km west of the airport, not east toward Split. For late arrivals after midnight, the shuttle doesn't run and your options narrow to ride-hailing or a pre-arranged pickup. Bolt tends to have better late-night driver coverage than Uber here. The arrivals hall is small and air-conditioned, a fine place to wait 10 minutes for a car at 1am. August nights still hold 24-26°C, with warm salt air drifting in off the Adriatic.

The bus station sits on the waterfront, and you'll catch the smell of grilled fish from the konobas along the Riva before you even pull out your phone. Diocletian's Palace, started in 293, is the old town itself, not a separate attraction with a ticket booth. Walk east along the promenade for 3 minutes and enter through the Bronze Gate at basement level. Bačvice beach, where locals play picigin in ankle-deep water on summer afternoons, is 15 minutes east on foot. Marjan hill rises to the west. From the bus station, you don't need a second transfer to reach any of them.
