Where should I stay in Split?

Varoš is the right answer for most first-time visitors to Split. This neighborhood sits directly west of Diocletian's Palace, built in 293, and climbs the lower slopes of Marjan hill. You wake up to the smell of coffee from the konoba below your window and the sound of church bells from the Cathedral of Saint Domnius, whose octagonal bell tower you'll spot from nearly every angle across the palace quarter. A 2-minute walk drops you inside the palace walls. A 10-minute walk west puts you at the pine-shaded trails of Marjan, where the stone is warm underfoot by 9am in August. Expect to pay €80-150 per night for a renovated stone apartment with wooden shutters and a kitchenette. Varoš's trade-off is the stairs. The streets are steep, and if you're hauling luggage uphill in 32°C heat, you'll feel every cobblestone. Book a place on the lower streets near Trg braće Radić if mobility matters.

Bačvice, the beach neighborhood 10 minutes east of the palace on foot, suits families and travelers who want to swim before breakfast. The beach is shallow, sandy, and warm enough for kids to wade in comfortably from June through September. Rates run €55-100 for a modern apartment, about 30% less than Varoš or inside the walls. You're still close to the Riva promenade and the ferry terminal, which matters if you're catching morning boats to Hvar or Brač. Bačvice's downside is nightclub noise. In July and August the bass carries until 3am through open windows. Ask your host for a unit facing inland, away from the waterfront. Firule, the quieter residential stretch one beach east of Bačvice, gives you the same access to the water at about €50-90 without the club problem.

Sleeping inside Diocletian's Palace walls is possible and worth the premium for a short stretch. A handful of boutique hotels occupy converted 4th-century buildings along the Peristyle and surrounding alleys. You hear footsteps echoing off 1,700-year-old limestone at midnight. Morning light cuts through the colonnade before tour groups arrive around 9am. Rates run €150-280, and rooms tend to be small, because the buildings are, well, Roman. Air conditioning fights hard against stone that has absorbed a full day of Adriatic sun, and some units still run warm past midnight in peak summer. Worth it for 2-3 nights if the budget allows. Not worth it for a full week, because there's no kitchen in most of these places, and restaurant fatigue sets in around day 4 when you've eaten at every spot within the walls.

Avoid booking too far inland, in neighborhoods like Gripe north of the center. Rates look €15-20 cheaper per night, but taxi costs eat the difference, and you miss the evening Riva walk that makes Split feel like Split. Croatia adopted the euro in January 2023, so pricing is transparent and every ATM dispenses euros directly. Book 6-8 weeks ahead for July and August. Shoulder months like May or early October drop rates by about 40%, and temperatures around 20-24°C make Varoš's hills and the Marjan trails far more walkable. The city's tourist tax adds roughly €1.30 per person per night at check-in.
