When's the best time to visit Koh Tao in 2026?

Come between March and August: the Gulf of Thailand stays calm, rain is light, and dive visibility at Chumphon Pinnacle often reaches 20 to 30 metres, with whale sharks most likely from March to May. Avoid November and December, when the northeast monsoon brings most of the year's rain and cancels ferries from Chumphon.

Koh Tao runs on a different calendar from Phuket and the Andaman coast. The Gulf side catches the southwest monsoon only at its edge, so from March through August the sea off Sairee Beach goes flat and glassy by 8am. Rain, when it comes, is a 20-minute afternoon downpour that smells of wet red earth and frangipani, and it's gone before sunset drinks. Air temperatures sit between 28°C and 33°C, the water in Mango Bay holds near 29°C, and most divers in Sairee's training pools skip the wetsuit entirely. April and May are the hottest stretch. By 10am the concrete track up to John-Suwan Mountain Viewpoint throws heat back at your shins, so walk it at 6:30am, when the cicadas are louder than the scooters.

Diving is the reason most first-timers come to Koh Tao, and it settles the question. Visibility at Chumphon Pinnacle and Sail Rock tends to peak between April and June, and whale sharks show up most reliably from March to May, with a second, thinner window in September. An Open Water course on the island still costs roughly 11,000 THB, about US$327 at the current rate of 33.69 baht to the dollar, and the price barely moves by month. July and August bring European school holidays, and the Sairee dive shops fill a week ahead. Book your course before you step off the Lomprayah catamaran at Mae Haad, not on the pier with a backpack on.

Mid-October to December is the honest no. The northeast monsoon swings in, November alone can drop more than 400mm of rain, and the east-coast bays take the swell head-on: Ao Tanote and Ao Leuk turn brown and churned, the snorkelling reef at Tanote disappears under silt, and the steep roads down to both become slick red mud that scooter tyres cannot grip. Ferries from Chumphon and Koh Samui get cancelled for a day or two at a time, which can strand you past a connecting flight out of Bangkok. If December is your only option, stay on the west coast at Sairee, leave two buffer days before any flight, and pack a real rain shell.

January and February sit in a useful middle position: the rain mostly stops by mid-January, but a cool northeast wind keeps the east side choppy, so Freedom Beach and Chalok Baan Kao on the south coast are calmer bets for snorkelling than Tanote. September and early October work the other way. Guesthouses in Sairee go quiet, room rates run 20 to 30 percent below August, and visibility is still decent, though the afternoon thunder stretches longer as October goes on. Today, 9 October, Koh Tao reads 28.1°C under overcast skies with 73% humidity, and it feels closer to 33°C on the walk up from Mae Haad pier.
