Where should I stay in Koh Tao?
For a first trip to Koh Tao, book north or central Sairee Beach. A songthaew from Mae Haad pier gets you there in 10 to 15 minutes, and once you arrive, dive schools and restaurants line a flat beach path at rates of 1,000 to 5,000 baht ($30 to $150) a night. If quiet evenings near Freedom Beach matter more to you, Chalok Baan Kao is the better call.
Sairee Beach works as the base for most first-timers, and the reason is the sand path. The 1.7 km beach runs flat from Sairee village, a short ride north of Mae Haad, up to Koh Tao Cabana at the far end, meaning you can walk to dinner and to a dive shop and back without getting on a scooter. That matters on Koh Tao. The island's clinics see a steady stream of riders with road rash from its steep concrete hills, and locals call those scars Koh Tao tattoos. Book the northern half for quieter nights: fan bungalows there start near 1,000 baht ($30), and air-conditioned rooms at places like Ban's Diving Resort in central Sairee tend to run 2,500 to 4,500 baht ($75 to $135). The southern stretch around AC Bar and Lotus Bar is louder, with fire-show drums and the smell of paraffin smoke carrying until about 1am. If you're doing a PADI Open Water course, ask the dive school about rooms before you book anything. Many Sairee schools discount a room for students on the roughly 11,000 baht course.
Chalok Baan Kao, on the south coast, is the pick for light sleepers and couples. The bay is shallow and calm, and at low tide the water turns warm and almost milky. After 10pm you'll mostly hear longtail engines, not speakers. Freedom Beach is about a 10-minute walk west over a rocky path, and the trail up to the John-Suwan Mountain Viewpoint starts close by. Each usually charges around 100 baht at the gate, and the viewpoint climb will soak your shirt by 9am. Rooms run roughly 1,200 to 3,500 baht ($36 to $104), though Jamahkiri Resort, above Ao Thian Ok, sits at the top end and can reach 6,000 baht ($178). Distance is the trade-off. A shared songthaew from Mae Haad pier costs about 200 baht per person and takes 15 minutes, and getting to Sairee for dinner means another taxi or a hilly scooter ride in the dark.
We'd skip two areas on a first trip. Mae Haad, the pier town, is fine for one night before an early Lomprayah catamaran to Chumphon, but the boat engines start rumbling around 6am and there's no swimming beach. The east coast bays, Ao Tanote, Ao Leuk and Ao Hin Wong, look peaceful on a map; reaching them means steep, rutted concrete roads, and a 4x4 taxi tends to cost 300 to 500 baht each way. From November the monsoon swell can also churn up the water on that side. Visit them on a day trip, then sleep in Sairee or Chalok Baan Kao.
On 9 October 2026 Koh Tao was overcast at 28.1°C, with 73% humidity pushing the feel to 32.7°C. Air-con is worth paying for if your budget allows, because Sairee fan rooms stay sticky well past midnight in this weather. Koh Tao scores 7.6/10 for solo-traveler safety (see the TTDI Solo-Safety Index), and the main risk on the island is the roads, not crime. The dollar currently buys about 33.7 baht, and songthaew drivers at Mae Haad want cash. For July, August and the two weeks around Christmas, book Sairee two to three weeks ahead.
Recommended neighborhoods
Sairee Beach (north and central)
A 1.7 km flat beach path lined with dive schools, restaurants and mid-range bungalows, where you can walk everywhere without a scooter. The north end is quieter. Rooms run 1,000 to 4,500 baht, and many schools discount rooms for course students.
Chalok Baan Kao
A calm, shallow bay on the south coast, walking distance from Freedom Beach and the John-Suwan viewpoint trail, and quiet after 10pm, which makes it a good fit for light sleepers and couples. It's a 15-minute songthaew from Mae Haad pier.
Skip these areas
- Mae Haad: The pier town has no swimming beach, and boat engines start around 6am. Use it for one night before an early ferry, not as a base.
- East coast bays (Ao Tanote, Ao Leuk, Ao Hin Wong): Steep, rutted access roads and 300 to 500 baht 4x4 taxis each way, with monsoon swell capable of roughening the water from November. Go on a day trip instead.
