3-day itinerary
Base yourself on Sairee Beach and think of Koh Tao in three areas. Day 1 gets you to Nang Yuan by longtail at 7:30am and back for a Sairee sunset. Day 2 opens with a morning try-dive, then takes you south to Freedom Beach and John-Suwan Viewpoint. Day 3 is a boat loop of the east coast: Mango Bay, Hin Wong, Tanote Bay and Shark Island.

Must-see
Koh Nang Yuan is the one sight to plan your day around: three granite islets off Koh Tao's northwest coast share a single sandbar, and a 15-minute climb reaches the island's best view. Go early, before the Koh Samui day-tour boats arrive. Entry is currently 100 baht, about $3, and plastic bottles are banned.

Food culture
Koh Tao runs on a dive-boat clock, not a kitchen one. Breakfast is at 6:30am in Mae Haad before the boats leave, lunch is a Thai rice plate behind Sairee Beach when they return, and dinner, southern curry or grilled squid, comes after 8pm. Nearly every ingredient crosses from Chumphon by ferry, so plates cost more than they do on the mainland.

Where locals go
Koh Tao's year-round crowd falls into two camps: Thai families in Mae Haad and dive professionals in Sairee. You'll find them at Taraporn's stilt bar at sunset, at Su Chili and Pranee's Kitchen after the afternoon dive boats return, at Zest Coffee Co before 9am, and at Freedom Beach on instructors' days off. Chalok Baan Kao is quieter and cheaper for a month.

Where to stay
For a first trip to Koh Tao, book north or central Sairee Beach. A songthaew from Mae Haad pier gets you there in 10 to 15 minutes, and once you arrive, dive schools and restaurants line a flat beach path at rates of 1,000 to 5,000 baht ($30 to $150) a night. If quiet evenings near Freedom Beach matter more to you, Chalok Baan Kao is the better call.

Best boutique hotels
Koh Tao is small enough that every bed sits near the water, but the island's three main bases feel very different, and picking the right one matters more than picking the hotel. The west coast runs from the ferry pier at Mae Haad north to Sairee Beach, and that stretch is at its busiest: dive shops, beach bars, and sunset crowds share one long strip of sand. Down south, Chalok Ban Kao sits in a sheltered bay with a slower rhythm: dive schools fill the mornings and the evenings stay quiet. Between the two, the small coves just south of the pier suit travelers who want to step off the boat and be at their room without crossing the island. Boutique stock here is mostly mid-range: small resorts, hillside villas, and beachfront rooms rather than design hotels or big chains. The real choice is about character. Decide whether you want nightlife on your doorstep, a quiet bay for early dives, or a short walk from the ferry, then pick the room.

Best restaurants
Koh Tao rewards the diner who picks a kitchen for what it commits to, and this list is built that way. It runs from a Thai room on Sairee Soi 1 to an Indian kitchen that opens in the afternoon, a Mexican cantina, a daytime spot that does breakfast, coffee, pancakes and sandwiches, and a hotpot and BBQ buffet. Five cuisines, five reasons to eat. Skip the menus that try to cover every cuisine on one laminated page; a kitchen that does one thing tends to do it with more care, and that is the bar we used here. Hours matter on a small island, so we give them where they are known: The Gallery Restaurant serves from 12:00 to 22:30, Monday to Saturday, The Factory keeps a 09:00 to 19:00 day, and Cantina de Koh Tao rests on Mondays. Where a closing time or phone number is missing, we say so rather than guess. This is a list for people who plan a meal, not people who stumble into one: divers coming off a long day, couples after a slow dinner, and anyone who wants breakfast that is not a hotel tray.
