Questions budget travelers ask about Koh Tao

Cost per day
Koh Tao runs about $32 a day on a budget (Sairee dorm, Thai rice plates, walking everywhere), $77 at midrange (bungalow, scooter, sit-down dinner), and $282+ for luxury (pool villa at Haad Tien or Tanote, private longtail, wine with dinner). Diving rewrites all of that. An Open Water course adds roughly 11,500 baht ($341) over three to four days.

What to avoid
Skip renting a scooter on Koh Tao unless you already ride well: the hills down to Ao Tanote and Ao Leuk break bones, and rental shops bill for old scratches. Skip the cheap buckets at the Sairee Beach bars and never leave your passport as a deposit. From late October to December, plan a spare night before any flight home.

Getting around
On the flat west coast between Sairee and Mae Haad, walking is fine. For anything farther, a shared pickup taxi runs the main routes at around 100 to 200 baht per person. To reach east-coast bays such as Ao Tanote, book a longtail boat. If you've never ridden a scooter at home, don't start here, because Koh Tao's hills punish beginners. Grab doesn't operate on the island.

Airport to city
Koh Tao has no airport, so every journey here ends on the water. Fly into Samui (USM), take a taxi of about 25 minutes to Maenam pier, and board the Lomprayah high-speed catamaran to Mae Haad pier, a crossing of about 1 hour 45 minutes. From Bangkok on a budget, Nok Air's fly-and-ferry ticket via Chumphon (CJM) costs less.

Food culture
Koh Tao runs on a dive-boat clock, not a kitchen one. Breakfast is at 6:30am in Mae Haad before the boats leave, lunch is a Thai rice plate behind Sairee Beach when they return, and dinner, southern curry or grilled squid, comes after 8pm. Nearly every ingredient crosses from Chumphon by ferry, so plates cost more than they do on the mainland.
