Koh Tao is small enough that every bed sits close to water, but the island splits into very different places to wake up. The west coast holds most of the rooms: Ban Hat Sai Ri (บ้านหาดทรายรี) runs along the island's longest beach, with dive schools, sunset bars and late nights, while Ban Mae Hat (บ้านแม่หาด) is the ferry village, where boats arrive and leave and the island does its errands. Just south of the pier, Jamson Bay Beach offers a short escape from that traffic without losing the convenience. In the south, Ban Chalok Ban Kao (บ้านโฉลกบ้านเก่า) wraps a shallow bay under green hillsides, and the resorts climb the slopes for the views. Snorkel beach, on the quieter coves, suits people who want reef time and early nights. The roads between these areas are steep, the taxis are pickup trucks, and where you sleep decides how you spend your evenings. Choose the area by the kind of day you want, whether that is diving at dawn, drinking at dusk or swimming off a quiet rock, and then choose the hotel.

    Ban Hat Sai Ri (บ้านหาดทรายรี)

Sairee Beach, northwest coast of Koh Tao, north of the Mae Haad pier

The island's long sunset beach, lined with dive schools and bars that keep going well after dark.

Sunset spills down the long sand at Ban Hat Sai Ri (บ้านหาดทรายรี), and most of Koh Tao's dive schools, beach bars and cheap eats sit on the narrow walking path behind it. This is the area for new divers and social travelers who want a course in the morning and a bar crawl at night. Skip the rooms stacked directly above the loudest bucket bars; the locals prefer the stretches a step back from the fire-show strip, where you can still walk to the sand and still sleep. Asia Divers Resort holds an 8.8 at about $41 a night, with guests noting it collected them from the ferry dock, while Blue Tao Beach Hotel steps up to an 8.9 at about $107 for a calmer stay with the same beach out front. Ban Mae Hat and its pier lie south along the coast road, so arrivals and departures are easy, and mornings here start late.

      Asia Divers Resort

Very nice, one of the cheapest options we had, But we were positively suprised. Included pickup at ferry dock, even though we hadn’t discussed this with the hotel.

    Ban Chalok Ban Kao (บ้านโฉลกบ้านเก่า)

Chalok Bay and the surrounding hillsides, southern Koh Tao

A sheltered southern bay with hillside resorts built for views, green slopes and slow evenings.

View Point Resort in Ban Chalok Ban Kao (บ้านโฉลกบ้านเก่า) runs at about $77 a night, holds a 9.3, and one guest called its restaurant the best on the island. Cape Shark Villas matches that 9.3 at about $152, with buildings set into the mountainside facing the ocean through thick greenery. That pairing tells you what the south is about: you trade nightlife for a view. Chalok Bay itself is shallow and calm, with a small cluster of dive shops, cafes and restaurants around the village, and quieter coves within reach on foot or by a short ride. If bar-hopping in Ban Hat Sai Ri every night is the plan, skip this area; the hill roads are steep and the taxi rides add up. It suits couples, returning divers and anyone who wants a terrace, a book and the bay going dark at sunset.

The best hotel I have stayed in in all of Thailand. The views are AMAZING, the green area with animals around, the hotel restaurant TOP! the best on the entire island.

    Ban Mae Hat (บ้านแม่หาด)

Mae Haad ferry pier village, central west coast of Koh Tao

The working ferry village, practical and busy, best for short stays and early boats.

The pier at Ban Mae Hat (บ้านแม่หาด) wakes up with the first ferries, and the village around it runs on pickup taxis, ticket desks, pharmacies, ATMs and dive shop meeting points. This is the island's service hub rather than its beach, so stay here for logistics: an early boat back to the mainland, a late arrival, or a quick hop between the island's two halves. Koh Tao Montra Resort is the anchor, holding an 8.9 at about $69 a night, a fair rate for a base this central. If you came for long beach days, the waterfront won't deliver; it's about boats, not swimming. Ban Hat Sai Ri sits up the coast to the north and Jamson Bay Beach just to the south, so better sand is close. It suits travelers who value convenience over scenery for a night or two.

    Jamson Bay Beach

Small bay just south of the Mae Haad pier, west coast of Koh Tao

A small, calmer bay near the pier that keeps you close to the ferries without the noise.

The water at Jamson Bay Beach shimmers just south of the Mae Haad pier, close enough to walk with a bag but away from the ferry noise. Sensi Paradise Beach Resort holds a 9.2 at about $86 a night, and guests describe it as a small resort near the pier yet removed from the commotion. That is the appeal: you get the convenience of Ban Mae Hat, its taxis, shops and dive meeting points, while sleeping beside a quieter stretch of sand. Be honest with yourself about swimming, though; guests report heavy boat traffic in the bay, so the sea here is better for looking at than snorkeling. Better than the pier-front guesthouses for a calm night before an early ferry, and better suited to couples than party crowds. For a full beach day, Ban Hat Sai Ri sits north along the coast.

    Snorkel beach

Quiet cove on Koh Tao's southeastern coast near Haad Tien

A secluded cove for reef swimming, quiet days and early nights far from the bars.

Reef water rolls right up to the rocks at Snorkel beach, and the whole point of coming here is stepping off the sand with a mask rather than booking a boat. Beach Club by Haadtien carries an 8.4 at about $80 a night, and guests sum it up as friendly, well placed, and quiet, which is exactly what this corner of the island delivers. Pass on the party strip on the west coast if you came for coral and sleep; the southeastern coves are where locals head to leave the bar noise behind. The trade-off is distance: the roads over the island's spine are steep, so getting to Ban Mae Hat or Ban Hat Sai Ri means a taxi or a boat, and restaurant choice beyond the resort is limited. It suits snorkelers, honeymooners, and readers, not first-timers who want to explore on foot every evening.
