Questions families with kids ask about Koh Tao
-
Is it safe?
Koh Tao scores 7.6/10 for solo safety (see the TTDI Solo-Safety Index), and most people travelling alone feel comfortable here. The bigger threat isn't crime, it's the roads: steep concrete hills down to Ao Leuk and Ao Tanote, wet sand on the bends, and rented scooters keep the clinics busy. On the Sairee bar strip after midnight, watch your drink. Call 1155 for the English-speaking Tourist Police.

What to pack
Pack for water, rain, and steep roads: Koh Tao this week sits at 28.1°C with 73% humidity under overcast skies. Bring reef-safe sunscreen from home, strap-on sandals with grippy soles, a dry bag, a headlamp, and travel insurance that names scuba and scooters. Ponchos and mosquito repellent you can pick up at any 7-Eleven on the island.

Getting around
On the flat west coast between Sairee and Mae Haad, walking is fine. For anything farther, a shared pickup taxi runs the main routes at around 100 to 200 baht per person. To reach east-coast bays such as Ao Tanote, book a longtail boat. If you've never ridden a scooter at home, don't start here, because Koh Tao's hills punish beginners. Grab doesn't operate on the island.

Best time to visit
Come between March and August: the Gulf of Thailand stays calm, rain is light, and dive visibility at Chumphon Pinnacle often reaches 20 to 30 metres, with whale sharks most likely from March to May. Avoid November and December, when the northeast monsoon brings most of the year's rain and cancels ferries from Chumphon.

Cost per day
Koh Tao runs about $32 a day on a budget (Sairee dorm, Thai rice plates, walking everywhere), $77 at midrange (bungalow, scooter, sit-down dinner), and $282+ for luxury (pool villa at Haad Tien or Tanote, private longtail, wine with dinner). Diving rewrites all of that. An Open Water course adds roughly 11,500 baht ($341) over three to four days.
