What's a good 3-day itinerary for Koh Tao?
Base yourself on Sairee Beach and think of Koh Tao in three areas. Day 1 gets you to Nang Yuan by longtail at 7:30am and back for a Sairee sunset. Day 2 opens with a morning try-dive, then takes you south to Freedom Beach and John-Suwan Viewpoint. Day 3 is a boat loop of the east coast: Mango Bay, Hin Wong, Tanote Bay and Shark Island.
Koh Tao has no airport. Most first-timers fly into Chumphon or Koh Samui and take a Lomprayah catamaran, which lands at Mae Haad pier, where taxi drivers wait at the end shouting fixed fares. The truck to Sairee costs about the same whichever driver you pick, so take the first one. Stay in Sairee rather than Mae Haad or Chalok Baan Kao: it has the island's longest sand, the most dinner options within a 10-minute walk, and the departure beach for Nang Yuan. One rule matters more than any sight. Don't rent a scooter if you have never ridden one. The concrete roads to Tanote and John-Suwan are steep enough that you can smell burning brake pads on the way down, and Wikivoyage's Stay Safe section warns about rental shops charging for old scratches. Keep your passport, photograph the bike, and use taxis instead.
Day 1 is built around the Samui day boats, which land on Nang Yuan around 11am and fill the sandbar, so getting there at 8am matters: you have the boardwalk mostly to yourself, the granite is still cool under your hands on the climb, and the water off the Japanese Gardens is clear and quiet enough to hear parrotfish crunching coral. The island bans plastic bottles, so carry a metal one. By 1pm the heat on Sairee is thick and smells of two-stroke exhaust and lemongrass, which makes that window the right time to sleep off the flight. Sairee faces west, so sunset from a Fizz beanbag at 6pm is the best free show on Koh Tao. At Su Chili, order the massaman if you are nervous about spice: it is mild, sweet and peanut-heavy, and the staff will cook anything 'pet nit noi', meaning a little spicy.
Day 2 starts underwater. A full PADI Open Water course runs three and a half days, which would consume this entire itinerary; a Discover Scuba session gets you two supervised dives on a single morning. Koh Tao certifies more divers than almost anywhere in Thailand, which means the instructors have worked through thousands of nervous beginners before you. The south coast fills the afternoon. Freedom Beach has soft, coarse sand and a reef close enough to reach without a boat, and John-Suwan is the best viewpoint on the island, showing Chalok Bay and Shark Bay on either side of one ridge. Wear trainers up there, because people slip on the boulders in flip-flops every week. Day 3 takes a boat along the east coast, whose roads first-timers should leave alone. Mango Bay and Hin Wong are rocky coves with almost no road access, and Tanote has a jumping rock about 5 metres high.
On 9 October 2026, Koh Tao was 28.1°C and overcast, with humidity making it feel like 32.7°C. October is shoulder season, and the northeast monsoon usually brings heavier rain and choppier crossings in November and December, so keep the Day 3 boat flexible. Bring cash. At 33.685 baht to the US dollar, most meals here cost between $2 and $13, and small viewpoint and beach entry fees are cash only; the ATMs at Mae Haad and on Sairee's main road charge foreign cards around 220 baht per withdrawal. For solo travellers, Koh Tao rates 7.6/10 for solo-traveler safety (see the TTDI Solo-Safety Index), and most of the risk on that score comes from the roads and late-night Sairee bars.
