Where should I stay in Nagoya?

Stay near Nagoya Station (Meieki) for your first visit. The Shinkansen terminal, Meitetsu line to Centrair Airport, and three subway lines all meet here. Expect ¥8,000-15,000 ($50-95) per night for a mid-range hotel. Sakae, two subway stops east, works better if nightlife and shopping matter more than transit connections.

Meieki, the district around Nagoya Station, is the right answer for a first trip. The Meitetsu μ-Sky express runs to Centrair Airport in 28 minutes, and three subway lines (Higashiyama, Sakura-dori, Tsurumai) branch out from here. You walk out of the Shinkansen gate and you're in the hotel district. JR Gate Tower and Midland Square sit above the tracks, their lower floors full of restaurants where the warm smell of miso nikomi udon fills the corridors around lunchtime. Mid-range hotels like the Royal Park Canvas or Daiwa Roynet run ¥8,000-15,000 ($50-95) per night. The Nagoya Marriott Associa, connected to the station's Takashimaya department store, goes for ¥25,000-40,000 ($159-255). The underground mall system, Esca on the west side and Unimall to the north, means you can eat dinner and buy an IC card without stepping outside in Nagoya's humid summers, when temperatures hold around 35°C through August.

Sakae sits two stops east on the Higashiyama Line, about a 5-minute ride from Meieki. This is Nagoya's nightlife and shopping center, with Hisaya Odori Park running north-south through the middle and the Nagoya TV Tower (built 1953) visible from most blocks. Hotels here tend to cost ¥1,000-2,000 less per night than the same tier near the station. The Hilton Nagoya on Nishiki-dori runs ¥20,000-30,000 ($127-191). To be fair, Sakae is louder at night. Izakaya noise spills from the Nishiki 3-chome blocks well past midnight, and the karaoke signs stay lit until 5am. But you're closer to the Osu shopping arcade, a 12-minute walk south, and the tebasaki wing joints along Sumiyoshi-dori where the peppery-sweet glaze smell fills the sidewalk by 6pm. Fushimi, one stop between Meieki and Sakae on the same line, offers a quieter spot at ¥7,000-12,000 ($45-76) with less foot traffic.

Osu Kannon and Kamimaezu, south of Sakae on the Tsurumai and Meijo subway lines, are Nagoya's budget base at ¥4,500-7,500 ($29-48) per night. The Osu shopping arcade has the closest thing Nagoya gets to street-food energy. Takoyaki stalls, vintage clothing shops, and udon joints line the covered walkways, with the warm soy-and-dashi smell thickening as you get deeper in. Osu Kannon temple, at the arcade's west entrance, dates to 1333. The trade-off is distance. You're 15-20 minutes by subway from Nagoya Station, and the last trains run around midnight. A late Shinkansen arrival means a ¥2,500-3,000 ($16-19) taxi. Nagoya Castle, founded in 1532, sits 20 minutes north of Osu by subway via Shiyakusho Station on the Meijo Line. Kanayama, three stops south of Meieki on JR and Meitetsu, runs at similar prices and has a direct airport link for early-morning flights.

Skip the Nagoya Dome area in Higashi-ku unless you're attending a Chunichi Dragons game. It's 25 minutes from central Nagoya by subway, and the surrounding blocks are residential with few restaurants open past 9pm. Nagoya Port is similar. Legoland Japan Resort is there, but the hotels nearby target families with dedicated packages, and you're isolated from the center by a 30-minute Meijo Line ride. Solo-traveler safety scores 8.5 out of 10 (see the TTDI Solo-Safety Index), and walking alone at night in Meieki or Sakae feels unremarkable. Convenience stores run 24 hours on every major block. Mind you, the humidity hits the moment you step outside from April through October. Late September currently sits around 26°C with 72% humidity. Air conditioning in the room is not a luxury. It determines whether you sleep.

Recommended neighborhoods

  • Meieki (Nagoya Station)

Shinkansen, Meitetsu airport link, and three subway lines converge here. Underground malls mean you barely need to go outside in summer. Mid-range hotels ¥8,000-15,000 ($50-95). The default first-timer pick.

  • Sakae

Shopping and nightlife center, two Higashiyama Line stops east of Meieki. Slightly cheaper than the station district. Louder at night, closer to the Osu shopping arcade and tebasaki wing restaurants.

  • Fushimi

Quiet compromise between Meieki and Sakae on the Higashiyama Line. Business hotels at ¥7,000-12,000 ($45-76) with low foot traffic and good subway access in both directions.

  • Osu Kannon / Kamimaezu

Budget base with street food, vintage shops, and covered arcades. ¥4,500-7,500 ($29-48) per night. Farther from the station at 15-20 minutes by subway, but full of local texture.

  • Kanayama

South-side transit hub with JR and Meitetsu access, including a direct Centrair Airport link. Similar budget prices to Osu. Practical, with limited late-night dining.

Skip these areas

  • Nagoya Dome area (Higashi-ku): 25 minutes from central Nagoya by subway. Residential blocks with few restaurants open past 9pm. Only practical if attending an event at the dome.
  • Nagoya Port / Kinjo-futo: Isolated by a 30-minute Meijo Line ride. Hotels here target Legoland Japan Resort family packages. Limited restaurants and no nightlife to speak of.
Typical price per night: $29-$255
