Where to stay
Stay near Nagoya Station (Meieki) for your first visit. The Shinkansen terminal, Meitetsu line to Centrair Airport, and three subway lines all meet here. Expect ¥8,000-15,000 ($50-95) per night for a mid-range hotel. Sakae, two subway stops east, works better if nightlife and shopping matter more than transit connections.

The fresh Hinoki cypress still scents the corridors. Entry is 500 yen. Arrive at the 9am opening before bus tours fill the rooms.

Morning coffee at kissaten comes with free toast and eggs, a local tradition since the 1950s.
