When's the best time to visit Brussels in 2026?

May, June, and September are the months we'd pick for Brussels. Sunsets come after 21:00, so the terraces on Place Sainte-Catherine stay full into the night, and once EU staff head home for the weekend, hotel rates near Schuman fall noticeably. January and February are worth avoiding: it gets dark before 17:00, and the drizzle around the Grand-Place has a way of not letting up for a whole week.

May and early June are where we'd start for a first visit to Brussels. By late May the sun sets after 21:30, so the fish stalls on Place Sainte-Catherine and the café tables around the Halles Saint-Géry stay loud with clinking glasses long after dinner. The Royal Greenhouses of Laeken usually open to the public for about three weeks between mid-April and May, and timed tickets tend to sell out within days of release, so book them before your flight. September is the quieter twin. The Brussels Beer Weekend fills the Grand-Place in early September with brewery tents and the yeasty smell of spilled tripel on the cobbles. Rain falls in Brussels in every month, so a packable shell earns its place in a June suitcase as much as in a November one.

July and August work, with trade-offs. Belgian National Day on 21 July brings a military parade along Rue Royale and fireworks over the Parc de Bruxelles, which makes a great show, though crossing the Pentagon by tram that afternoon is miserable. The Royal Palace currently opens to visitors only from late July to early September, and that is the one strong reason to come in high summer. The EU Quarter empties in August, which brings midweek rates around Schuman down, though some family-run restaurants in Ixelles and Saint-Gilles close for two or three weeks then. The Flower Carpet covers the Grand-Place in begonias every second August: the 2026 edition is over, and the next one is due in 2028.

For most first-timers, November through February is the stretch to avoid: wind funnels down Boulevard Anspach, and the cobbles near Manneken Pis turn slick under a grey 16:30 dusk. The exception is Winter Wonders (Plaisirs d'Hiver), which runs from late November into early January between the Bourse and Place Sainte-Catherine, bringing mulled wine, smoked sausages, and a Ferris wheel by the Marché aux Poissons. Go on a Tuesday or Wednesday evening, because on Saturdays the crowd moves at shuffle pace. October falls in between. On the evening of 19 October 2026 the city read 14°C, overcast, at 79% humidity. That is museum weather, so spend it at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts, then queue at Maison Antoine on Place Jourdan for frites in a paper cone, hot enough to sting your fingers through it.

The most useful thing you can do is plan around the EU calendar, not the forecast. When European Council summits sit at the Europa building, often in late June, October and December, hotels near Schuman and Luxembourg station can roughly double their midweek prices. Book a Friday-to-Monday stay in May or September near the Grand-Place or Sainte-Catherine, and you'll be a 10-minute walk from Brussels-Central station, paying leisure rates during the city's best weather.
