When's the best time to visit Paris in 2026?

Go in late May, June, or September, when Paris gives you long, mild afternoons for the Seine quays and the Jardin du Luxembourg, café terraces staying full well into the evening. Skip August for the heat and summer closures, and skip January and February for the grey. For a first trip, June edges out September because its evening light lasts longest.

June is the month we'd pick for a first visit. Sunset in Paris comes close to 10pm around the 21 June solstice, which means a first-day jet-lag nap still leaves hours of light for the Seine quays and the Pont des Arts. The solstice also falls on Fête de la Musique, when brass bands, DJs, and school choirs play free on street corners from Belleville to the Latin Quarter, with the smell of merguez smoke drifting off pop-up grills along Canal Saint-Martin that night. The trade-off is queues at the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower. Late May and early June bring Roland-Garros crowds to the 16th arrondissement too, and the Eiffel Tower summit can sell out days ahead, so book a timed ticket before you fly. June rain in Paris tends to come as short afternoon showers that rattle on café awnings along Rue de Buci and usually pass within 20 minutes.

September is a close second, and it's kinder on price. Parisians return from their August holidays for la rentrée in the first week of the month, neighbourhood bakeries in the 11th reopen, and the croissants are warm again by 7am. The third weekend brings the Journées du Patrimoine, when ministries, the Élysée Palace courtyard, and private hôtels particuliers open free for two days. Mind you, Paris Fashion Week runs from late September into early October, and hotel rates in Saint-Germain and the 8th arrondissement climb hard that week, so check the dates before you book. October still works too: Nuit Blanche fills the city with free all-night art installations on the first Saturday of the month, and on the evening of 15 October 2026 the air in Paris read 22.9°C under clear skies, which is unusually mild for a month that normally averages highs nearer 16°C.

Skip August if you can. The city empties as Parisians leave for the coast, and a hand-lettered 'fermeture annuelle' sign goes up on many family bistros in the Marais and Montmartre. Heat waves have pushed past 35°C, and the all-time record of 42.6°C was set on 25 July 2019; few older Paris hotels have air conditioning, so a top-floor room near Montmartre can feel like an attic oven at midnight. Paris Plages, the sand and deckchairs along the Seine and the Bassin de la Villette, is the consolation, but Louvre lines are no shorter in August. January and February are the other weak window: highs barely clear single digits, the sky over the Tuileries stays a flat pewter grey for days, and the sun sets before 5.30pm. December is the exception worth considering. The Galeries Lafayette dome tree and the window displays on Boulevard Haussmann draw families, and the Eiffel Tower sparkles for five minutes every hour after dark, which starts before 5pm.

Whatever month you choose, book two things before you land at Charles de Gaulle: a timed Louvre entry, since the museum turns away walk-ups on busy days and closes every Tuesday, and a hotel in the 4th, 6th or 7th arrondissement, so your first evening walk to the Seine takes 10 minutes rather than a Metro transfer. For budgeting, 1 US dollar bought about 0.89 euros on 15 October 2026, which puts a €2.50 Metro ticket at roughly $2.80.
