Savannah sits on a low bluff above the Savannah River, about fifteen miles inland from the Atlantic, laid out in 1733 on a grid of public squares that James Oglethorpe designed as Georgia's first colonial settlement. Twenty-two of those original twenty-four squares survive, each one a small park ringed by live oaks and azaleas, and they give the Historic District a rhythm no other American city has: you walk two blocks, cross a square, walk two more, cross another. The population is around 148,000, but the historic core is compact enough that most visitors never need a car once they arrive. Spanish moss hangs from nearly every mature tree, and the effect in late afternoon light is genuinely strange, more like a film set than a real place, which is partly why so many productions shoot here. The district runs from River Street on the waterfront south to Forsyth Park, where a cast-iron fountain from 1858 anchors the southern end of the walking grid. South of the district, the Starland District is where younger Savannah residents eat and drink, with smaller spots that don't cater exclusively to tourists. Farther south, Ardsley Park has wide residential streets and some of the better restaurants along Bull Street. Savannah's heat is real and worth planning around: summer afternoons regularly reach the mid-nineties with humidity to match, and the smart move is to walk before noon, eat a long lunch, and come back out after five. The food leans on Lowcountry cooking, which here means shrimp, rice, okra, and a lot of butter, though the city has enough range now that you won't eat the same meal twice. River Street, cobblestoned and lined with cotton warehouses, is the most touristy stretch but worth one evening walk for the cargo ships passing at arm's length.
