Is Savannah good for digital nomads in 2026?

Savannah scores 4.8/10 for digital nomads (sourced from TTDI's editorial rubric), and home cable is fast enough for video calls. The weak spots are thin coworking, Historic District rents priced for tourists, and a hard visa ceiling for visa-free visitors. Base yourself in Starland or Thomas Square, near the Bull Street Library, and stay away from River Street.

Savannah gets home internet right: Xfinity cable and AT&T Fiber plans of 300 Mbps to 1 Gbps reach most of the Historic District and Starland. Some carriage-house rentals behind Jones Street still run on one router two floors away, though, so before you book, ask the host for a speedtest.net screenshot taken in the bedroom, not the number in the listing. Location is the bigger trap. A rental on River Street or in City Market sits above bars that pour until 3 am, and you'll hear the low horns of container ships passing under the Talmadge Memorial Bridge. Starland and Thomas Square, south of Forsyth Park, make a better month, with furnished one-bedrooms running $1,800 to $2,600, compared with $2,500 to $3,800 in the squares north of Gaston Street. The Kroger on East Gwinnett Street covers groceries, and you'll find coin laundries along Abercorn Street. Book 30 nights or more: city rules restrict short-term vacation rentals in many residential wards, and monthly stays usually fall outside them.

Coworking is where the score drops. Savannah has no large hot-desk chain floor, and the small independents change owners often, so phone ahead before you pay for a month. Regus runs a serviced-office centre that sells day passes, though SCAD students fill every table near campus from September to May. The best free desk in town is the Bull Street Library, the Live Oak Public Libraries central branch at 2002 Bull Street, with quiet reading rooms, public wifi, and air conditioning cold enough to need a sweater. The Sentient Bean, at the south end of Forsyth Park, tolerates laptops, but its lunch crowd takes every seat by noon and the room smells of espresso and veggie chili. Foxy Loxy on Bull Street has a brick courtyard and outlets, though weekend afternoons there get loud. For calls, Savannah Coffee Roasters on Liberty Street is quietest before 10 am.

Plan on about $4,000 a month all in: roughly $2,200 for a Starland one-bedroom, $500 for groceries, $250 for desk passes, $150 for utilities, $600 for a rental car or rides, and around $300 for meals out. The car is close to essential, because Chatham Area Transit buses thin out after dark and the free DOT shuttle covers the downtown core alone. Timing matters too. Today's 17.8°C under clear skies is what October to April feels like, but from June the air turns thick and wet, afternoon thunderstorms can cut power in older wards, and hurricane season lasts until 30 November, so keep a charged power bank. When the wind comes from the west, the International Paper mill sends a sulphur smell over downtown.

Solo-traveler safety rates 6.2/10 (see the TTDI Solo-Safety Index). Car break-ins are the usual complaint, so leave nothing on the seats overnight around Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Getting to know locals takes effort here, because many residents are SCAD students who leave in May. The Forsyth Farmers' Market on Saturday mornings at the park's south end is the most reliable place to become a familiar face, where you'll smell boiled peanuts and see stacks of Georgia shrimp on ice. For a weekend break, Fort Pulaski National Monument on Cockspur Island is about 25 minutes' drive east, and at low tide you can hear fiddler crabs clicking in the marsh mud. This week the Savannah Ghost Pirates play the South Carolina Stingrays at Enmarket Arena on Friday 23 October, which is an easy, cheap way to sit among Chatham County regulars.

Visa options

The US has no digital nomad visa. ESTA travellers under the Visa Waiver Program get 90 days with no extension, and trips to Canada, Mexico or the Caribbean do not reset that clock. A B-1/B-2 visitor visa usually allows up to six months per entry, but neither visa lets you work for US clients. Remote work for a foreign employer is a grey area, so carry a return ticket and proof of funds.
