Savannah's cafe scene is smaller than the tourist volume suggests, and better for it. The historic district holds a few coffee counters that have earned their morning queues, but the more interesting cups are south of Forsyth Park, in the Starland and Thomas Square blocks where a handful of independent roasters, bakeries and juice bars keep unglamorous hours for a neighbourhood that lives there. What follows is 12 cafes worth planning a morning around, ordered by how confidently we would send a visitor with one week and a rented bike. Expect early closes on weekends, expect the good bakeries to sell out by lunch, and expect the coffee to be strong, unfussy, and priced for a college town rather than a resort.
