Savannah for couples
Pizzeria Vittoria Napoletana: Neapolitan wood-fired pizza in the Thomas Square blocks south of the historic squares. Most of the picks for couples in Savannah sit in Savannah Historic District and Habersham Woods; five of them stay open past 21:00, so evenings run late.

3-day itinerary
Day 1 covers the Historic District's squares on foot, from the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist through Monterey Square to Forsyth Park. Day 2 shifts north to River Street and the Telfair Museums. Day 3 heads east by car to Bonaventure Cemetery, Fort Pulaski, and Tybee Island. About 20 kilometres of walking across all three days.

Must-see
Forsyth Park, not River Street. Start at the cast-iron fountain in the 30-acre park at the southern end of the Historic District. Walk north through the original squares before 9am, when the live oaks still drip with overnight condensation and the cobblestones hold cool air. The riverfront is a gift-shop corridor.

Food culture
Savannah eats Lowcountry, rooted in the Gullah-Geechee rice-and-seafood tradition. Stone-ground grits, tidal-creek shrimp, she-crab soup, and red rice appear on menus from the Historic District to the Starland District. Skip the River Street tourist corridor for serious eating. The best plates come from neighborhood restaurants south of Forsyth Park, where kitchens still cook in cast iron and bacon fat.

Where locals go
Savannah's locals skip the River Street tourist corridor and gather south of Forsyth Park in the Starland District, around Bull Street between 37th and 41st. Foxy Loxy Cafe, The Sentient Bean, and Starland Yard draw the under-40 creative crowd. Thunderbolt, a fishing village 10 minutes east on Victory Drive, is where Savannahians eat shrimp on weeknights.

Where to stay
The Historic District between Forsyth Park and River Street for a first visit. You can walk to 21 of 22 squares, every major restaurant, and the riverfront without a car. Budget $150-300 for a Historic District hotel, $90-160 for the Victorian District two blocks south. Skip Tybee Island unless you want a beach trip, not a city trip.

Best boutique hotels
Savannah sorts its hotels into two distinct bands. The Historic District and its immediate neighbors south of Gaston Street hold the inn-and-villa stock: converted townhouses that charge for the square footage and the proximity to Forsyth Park. Outside that core, a ring of midtown and I-95 corridor properties trades character for rate savings, with chain rooms starting below $100 a night. The gap is real: the Historic District's Azalea Inn and Villas asks $171 for a courtyard suite steps from Monterey Square; Henderson's SpringHill Suites along I-95 books at $84 for a newer room and a parking lot. Between those poles sit Habersham Woods and Oakhurst along the Abercorn Street corridor, where midtown chain hotels hold ratings above 8.0 and nightly rates land between $92 and $107. Robert M Hitch Village, just south of the district line, splits the difference: walkable to the squares but priced closer to midtown. Tranquilla Woods rounds out the southern spread with extended-stay inventory near the Oglethorpe Mall strip. Savannah is a small city: even the I-95 exits sit within a short drive of River Street. The question is not distance but character: oak canopy and brick sidewalks, or highway frontage and a free breakfast bar.

Best restaurants
Savannah eats the way its squares are laid out: on a grid of easy walks, with the good tables tucked a block off the obvious ones. The list below runs from a wood-fired Neapolitan pie shop in the Thomas Square blocks down to a River Street Greek room, and includes a downtown diner that opens at 08:00, a Habersham Street deli built around Arab and Mediterranean cooking, and a two-shift Bull Street kitchen that leans Asian and fusion. It is a list for a visitor who has three or four meals to spend and does not want to give them all to the same three River Street patios. Hours matter here more than in most cities: a lot of the best kitchens keep short, honest windows, some closing by 14:00, some not opening the door until 17:00, one running until 03:30 on the weekend. Read the times before you walk. The addresses are almost all inside the 31401 postal grid, which means everything on this list is a stroll, a short cab, or, in one case, a deliberate drive out to 31405.
