When's the best time to visit Honolulu in 2026?

Mid-April through early June is when Honolulu stops performing for the mainland winter-escape crowd and settles into itself. Daytime temperatures hold around 28°C (82°F), and the northeast trades blow steadily enough that sitting on the lanai at the Moana Surfrider feels like someone left a fan on. Rainfall on the leeward side, where Waikīkī and downtown sit, averages under 25mm per month. The water off Sans Souci Beach warms to about 26°C (79°F). You can walk the 1.3-km trail up Diamond Head at 7am without queuing past the first switchback. Rates at mid-range hotels along Kūhiō Avenue tend to drop 30-40% from their December highs. To be fair, you lose the humpback whale season, which wraps up by late April. But the lighter crowds at ʻIolani Palace, which dates to 1879, mean you might get a docent-led tour without booking two weeks ahead.

December through March is when Honolulu charges the most for the least elbow room. A standard room at the Outrigger Waikīkī that goes for $250 in May hits $420 in late December. The North Shore pulls 6-to-12-metre swells at Pipeline and Sunset Beach from November through February, which is worth the drive from Waikīkī if you care about surf. The rest of Oʻahu's south-facing beaches stay calm year-round. Rainfall picks up on the windward side. Kailua gets about 130mm in January compared to 30mm in June. Waikīkī itself stays drier, maybe 60mm, but you will notice more afternoon showers. The air smells different after those rains, thick with plumeria and wet pavement. Morning temperatures dip to 20°C (68°F), which Honolulu locals treat as winter.

July and August bring mainland families and Japanese tourists on Obon holiday. Ala Moana Beach Park fills by 9am on weekends. The USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor, built in 1962, requires timed-entry passes that sell out days ahead. Temperatures reach 31°C (88°F) and the trades occasionally stall for a few days in August, leaving Waikīkī still and humid in a way that the concrete of Kalākaua Avenue makes worse. Hurricane season runs June through November, but a direct hit on Oʻahu is rare. The last significant one was Hurricane Iniki in 1992, which struck Kauaʻi, not Honolulu. That said, the threat does occasionally disrupt flights and hotel prices.

September and October are likely the best-kept timing secret on Oʻahu. The summer crowds thin out after Labor Day, hotel rates drop to near-April levels, and ocean temperatures peak around 27°C (81°F). The Aloha Festivals run through September with block parties on Kalākaua Avenue and a floral parade past the Aloha Tower, which has anchored the harbor since 1926. You can get a table at Helena's Hawaiian Food in Kalihi without the 45-minute wait that February demands. The laulau there, pork wrapped in taro leaves and steamed until it falls apart, tastes like salt and smoke and earth. Evenings cool to about 24°C (75°F). The Honolulu Museum of Art, open since 1922, runs its ARTafterDARK series on the last Friday of each month, and in October the courtyard is warm enough to linger past 10pm.
