When's the best time to visit Honolulu in 2026?

Book one of two windows: mid-April to early June, or September to late October. In May the afternoon high in Waikiki holds around 29°C, the northeast trade winds keep the palms along Kalākaua Avenue rattling, and the sea at Kūhiō Beach sits around 25°C. One week to avoid is Japanese Golden Week, roughly 29 April to 5 May, when flights from Tokyo fill the beachfront towers. September opens up once mainland schools go back after Labor Day, and that month the Aloha Festivals close Kalākaua for the Waikiki Hoʻolauleʻa street party, which smells of grilled huli huli chicken and plumeria leis. Late October is a reliable read on what you get: at 7am on 19 October the airport read 23.7°C under a clear sky with 76% humidity, warm enough for a swim at Queen's Surf before breakfast. Cirque du Soleil's Auana is playing at the Outrigger Waikiki Beachcomber this week.

Winter, from November to March, is when Oʻahu's North Shore earns its name. Swells at Waimea Bay and the Banzai Pipeline can reach 9 metres, and the Vans Triple Crown runs from November into December. From January to March humpback whales blow and breach off Makapuʻu Point, and on calm days you can hear the spray from the lighthouse trail. The rain mostly falls as short squalls over Mānoa Valley and the Koʻolau Range, while Waikiki stays fairly dry. The north-facing beaches are dangerous for swimmers in winter, so watch the surf from the sand and swim on the south shore. The real cost is price: from mid-December to New Year, Waikiki room rates hit their yearly high, and the Honolulu Marathon on the second Sunday of December closes roads around Kapiʻolani Park.

Summer, from June to August, is the season we'd skip if you have a choice. August highs reach about 31°C, the sand at Ala Moana Beach Park burns bare feet by 11am, and mainland families pack the beach in front of the Royal Hawaiian. South swells do make Canoes in Waikiki a good place for a first surf lesson. The King Kamehameha Day parade on 11 June starts downtown near ʻIolani Palace, where the statue is draped in leis many metres long. Hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, but direct hits on Oʻahu are rare, and a smaller risk is box jellyfish, which tend to wash onto south-facing beaches like Waikiki about 8 to 10 days after a full moon.

Two bookings matter more than the month you pick. USS Arizona Memorial tickets on Recreation.gov open 8 weeks ahead, with a smaller batch released the day before. Diamond Head now requires a timed reservation for non-residents: $5 entry plus $10 for parking. Take the 6am slot, because the crater trail is bare rock with no shade. If you are flying in from the mainland, jet lag will probably wake you at 4am anyway, so use that first morning for the summit at sunrise.
