Fort Lauderdale sits on more than 300 miles of inland waterways, a canal system so extensive that water taxis function as public transit rather than a tourist novelty. The city earned the nickname Venice of America not from marketing but from decades of dredging that turned mangrove swamp into navigable channels threading through neighborhoods like Rio Vista and Las Olas Isles, where homes back up to private docks instead of driveways. For most of the late twentieth century Fort Lauderdale was synonymous with spring break (the 1960 film Where the Boys Are cemented that reputation) but starting in the mid-1980s the city deliberately dismantled the infrastructure of binge tourism, replacing beachfront bars with a redesigned promenade and a low wave wall that opened sightlines from A1A to the Atlantic. That pivot worked. Today the beach is wide, clean, and notably calmer than South Beach thirty miles south, which is exactly the point most residents make within five minutes of conversation. The cultural center has shifted inland along the New River, where the NSU Art Museum and the Broward Center for the Performing Arts anchor the waterfront that locals walk in the evenings. Flagler Village, just north of downtown, has become the denser, younger district where warehouse conversions house breweries and galleries. Wilton Manors, technically its own municipality but functionally a Fort Lauderdale neighborhood, is one of the most concentrated LGBTQ+ communities in the country, with Wilton Drive as its main street. Las Olas Boulevard remains the default answer when anyone asks where to eat, a palm-lined stretch running east from downtown toward the beach where independent restaurants still outnumber chains. Port Everglades, at the southern edge, makes this one of the busiest cruise ports in the hemisphere, and embarkation days shape everything from restaurant staffing to traffic on 17th Street.
