Check August rates

August is Koh Tao's second high season, driven more by European school holidays than by any change in the weather. Divers from Italy, Spain, France and the Netherlands fill Sairee Beach from late July until roughly 20 August, and dorm beds and fan bungalows tend to book out first. The weather is also better than many visitors expect: Koh Tao sits in the Gulf of Thailand, where the southwest monsoon arrives far more gently than it does in Phuket or Krabi on the Andaman coast, and in August the island usually sees short showers rather than whole weeks lost to rain.

Expect daytime highs around 28.4°C (83°F) and nights that barely cool, dropping to about 26.2°C (79°F). The sea stays close to bath temperature, roughly 29°C (84°F), so many divers wear a 3mm shorty or no wetsuit at all. Wind is the thing to watch: westerly gusts can churn up the water off Sairee and Mae Haad, and on those days most dive boats go round to the sheltered east coast at Tanote Bay and Aow Leuk.

Our honest verdict is that August is a good month, not the best one. March and April bring calmer seas and clearer water, and August still beats October through December, when the northeast monsoon arrives and some Chalok Baan Kao dive shops cut back their schedules.

Why visit in August

  • Warm water lets you do 50-minute dives at Twins and White Rock in a thin shorty or a rash guard, making August one of the easier months for first-time Open Water students.
  • The Gulf coast stays much drier than the Andaman side this month, so Koh Tao works as a monsoon escape for travelers whose Phuket, Krabi or Koh Lanta plans got rained out.
  • Every dive school on Sairee and in Chalok Baan Kao runs a full daily schedule, so fun dives and courses start almost every morning instead of waiting for enough students to sign up.
  • Surat Thani's Rong Rian rambutan and Chumphon's mangosteen arrive on the island ferries at their seasonal best.

Worth knowing

  • Beachfront rooms on Sairee often sell out 2-3 weeks ahead during the first half of August, and the cheapest dorms go first.
  • Westerly winds sometimes cancel snorkel boats to Koh Nang Yuan and turn the roughly 2-hour catamaran crossing from Chumphon into a rough ride.
  • Rain falls on most days, usually as a 30-60 minute burst in the afternoon or overnight, which can cut a Tanote Bay beach afternoon short.
  • Dengue cases in Surat Thani province usually rise in the rainy months, and mosquitoes breed in standing water around Chalok Baan Kao and Mae Haad.

Best for

  • Open Water and Advanced course students who want warm water and a full daily course schedule
  • Andaman-coast travelers moving to the Gulf side to get away from heavier southwest-monsoon rain in Phuket and Krabi
  • Social solo travelers, because Sairee's hostels and beach bars are at their busiest in August
  • European families tied to school holidays who want a dive or snorkel trip rather than a resort stay

Think twice if

  • You want the island's lowest room rates: Late September and June run cheaper.
  • You get seasick easily and have to cross from Chumphon on a windy day
  • You want quiet beaches: Sairee and Freedom Beach are at their busiest in August.
Weather measured 28° / 26°C 145mm rain · 22 rainy days · 79% humidity rains perceptibly ~2.7h/day · 70% of mornings dry
Crowds high
Pack Quick-dry synthetic shirts, two swimsuits so one can dry, a packable rain shell, sandals that grip wet concrete, and reef-safe sunscreen for long surface intervals.

Rainfall averages 145mm (5.7 in) across about 22 rainy days, though the timing matters far more than the total: most showers arrive late afternoon or overnight and clear within an hour. Humidity sits at 79%, which means a cotton shirt is damp by 10am. Mornings on the east coast at Tanote Bay and Aow Leuk are the calmest part of the day.

Seasonal caution

  • Southwest monsoon winds can push 1-2m (3-6ft) swells onto the west coast and occasionally delay or cancel ferries between Chumphon, Koh Tao and Koh Phangan. Build in a spare day before any international flight.

Best things to do in August

PADI or SSI Open Water course

diving

The course runs three and a half to four days, covering theory, pool or shallow confined water, and four open-water dives. Schools on Sairee and in Chalok Baan Kao use Japanese Gardens and Twins as their training sites.

Warm water, full daily course starts, and sheltered east-coast backup sites mean a windy day rarely stops a course in August.

Booking tipBook 7-10 days ahead for start dates between 1 and 20 August. Many schools include a dorm bed with the course during the busy weeks.

Deep dives at Chumphon Pinnacle and Sail Rock

diving

Chumphon Pinnacle is a granite pinnacle about 11km (7 miles) northwest of Koh Tao with the top at about 14m (46ft), while Sail Rock lies about halfway to Koh Phangan and has a vertical swim-through called the Chimney. Both sites draw big schools of barracuda and trevally.

Plankton blooms in the rainy season sometimes bring passing whale sharks, though the most reliable sightings come in March-April and September-October.

Booking tipSign up the afternoon before. Boats usually leave between 6:30am and 7am, and on windy August days the Sail Rock trips often fill up first.

East-coast snorkeling at Tanote Bay and Aow Leuk

snorkeling

Both bays have coral within 50m (165ft) of the sand. At Tanote there's a boulder people jump from, and parrotfish feed in the shallows.

The east coast is sheltered from August's westerly winds, so the water here stays clear while Sairee churns.

Booking tipWe'd take a songthaew taxi from Mae Haad rather than riding a scooter, because the concrete road down to Aow Leuk is steep and slick after rain.

Early boat to Koh Nang Yuan

island trip

Three linked islets are joined by a sandbar off the northwest tip of Koh Tao, and a short climb leads to the viewpoint over the sandbar.

Mornings before 10am are usually calm in August. Afternoon westerlies can make the longtail ride back from Sairee a wet one.

Booking tipPlastic water bottles are banned on the island, so bring a reusable bottle and budget for the entry fee, which you pay on arrival.

Dawn hike to John-Suwan Viewpoint

hiking

A 15-20 minute scramble above Chalok Baan Kao brings you to a rock ledge that looks over Shark Bay and Chalok bay at the same time.

In August, dawn is the dry window before afternoon cloud builds. The granite is also still dry and grippy then.

Booking tipGo before 7am. There's a small access fee at the trailhead near Freedom Beach.

Full Moon Party trip to Haad Rin, Koh Phangan

nightlife

An all-night beach party on Haad Rin Nok. The Lomprayah and Seatran ferries run from Mae Haad pier and take about 1-1.5 hours to Thong Sala.

The August full moon falls late in the month in 2026, after the busiest holiday weeks, which makes ferries and Haad Rin rooms a little easier to book.

Booking tipBook the return ferry for the second day after the party: morning-after boats sell out, and wind can cancel the late-afternoon departures.

What to eat in August

In season: fruit

  • Rong Rian rambutan (ngo rong rian)

Surat Thani province's famous rambutan variety peaks from late July into August: the fruit is crisp, dry-fleshed, and separates cleanly from the seed. Look for it in bunches at the Mae Haad pier fruit stalls.

  • Mangosteen (mangkhut)

Mangosteen from Chumphon and Nakhon Si Thammarat is still in season in August, with a thick rind and white, tart-sweet flesh inside. Squeeze a fruit gently before buying, because the hard ones have dried out.

  • Longkong

This southern Thai cousin of langsat starts arriving in August and runs into October, in small grape-like clusters that are sweeter than the langsat sold in Bangkok.

  • Chumphon Mon Thong durian

Chumphon's durian harvest runs from June into August, so the late-season fruit reaching Koh Tao comes straight off the mainland ferries. Many guesthouses on Sairee ban durian from the rooms, so plan to eat it at the stall.

Regular events in August

Mother's Day (Queen Sirikit's Birthday)Free

A national public holiday: government offices and banks in Mae Haad close, many Thai residents of Koh Tao go to temple in the morning, and Thai families from Bangkok tend to book island rooms for the long weekend.

12 August

Surat Thani Rambutan Fair (Ngo Rong Rian Festival)Free

The province's rambutan fair in Ban Na San district has fruit parades, a fruit-decorated float competition, and grower stalls, and you can reach it from Koh Tao via Samui or the Surat Thani night boat.

Early to mid August, dates set each year by the province

Full Moon Party, Haad Rin

The monthly beach party on Koh Phangan's southern tip, and for a lot of Koh Tao backpackers it's the one off-island night of their trip.

On or near the full moon, which falls on 28 August in 2026, though organisers sometimes shift the date away from Buddhist holidays.

Khao Phansa (start of Buddhist Lent)Free

Candle processions and merit-making at Koh Tao's temples, with alcohol sales restricted nationwide for the day, so Sairee's bars go quiet.

Late July or early August, depending on the lunar year

Insider tips

  • When the wind swings west, ask your dive shop about east-coast sites the night before, since boats from Chalok Baan Kao reach Hin Wong and Tanote pinnacles faster than those from Sairee.

  • Stay in Chalok Baan Kao rather than Sairee in the first 3 weeks of August. The bay is on the south side, so it's calmer and quieter, and rooms there often cost less for the same standard.

  • Buy fruit at the Mae Haad pier stalls in the morning, when the first ferry from Chumphon brings in the day's rambutan and mangosteen.

  • Mornings are the better bet in August: dive and snorkel before noon, then save the afternoon for a massage or a nap while the squalls pass.

Avoid these mistakes

  1. Booking the last ferry to Chumphon or Samui on the same day as an international flight. August wind cancels afternoon sailings often enough that a buffer day is worth it.
  2. Renting a scooter to ride to Aow Leuk or Tanote after rain. The steep concrete roads there account for a large share of the road-rash cases at the island clinics.
  3. Arriving in early August without a room booked on Sairee and expecting to find one by walking around. The holiday weeks fill the cheap dorms.

Practical tips for August

Book accommodation 2-3 weeks ahead for 1 to 20 August, and give yourself a spare day before any flight out of Chumphon, Surat Thani or Samui. Banks and government offices in Mae Haad close on the Mother's Day holiday, but ATMs, pharmacies and dive shops stay open. Bars on Sairee stop serving alcohol on Khao Phansa, and 7-Elevens across Thailand follow the national alcohol-sale hours of 11am-2pm and 5pm-midnight. Tipping dive crews is common, and most divers leave something in the tip box on the boat at the end of a course. Temples in Mae Haad expect covered shoulders and knees. FAQ

Is August a good time to visit Koh Tao?

Yes, with caveats. The Gulf side gets far less rain than Phuket or Krabi in August, and diving runs every day, but rooms cost more, the island is at its busiest, and windy days push the dive boats to the east coast.

Is Koh Tao crowded in August?

It's busy. European school holidays pack Sairee's dive schools and hostels until around 20 August, while the east-coast bays and Chalok Baan Kao stay noticeably quieter, and the crowds thin out quickly in the last week of the month.

Can you dive in Koh Tao in August?

Yes. Visibility at the offshore pinnacles is often 15-25m (50-80ft), the water is warm enough that most divers skip a full wetsuit, and when the westerlies blow, schools move to the sheltered bays in the east and south.

Is Koh Tao safe for solo travelers in August?

Koh Tao scores 7.6/10 for solo-traveler safety (see the TTDI Solo-Safety Index). In August, the biggest risks are scooter crashes on wet hill roads and rough ferry crossings rather than crime, so use songthaews after rain and keep a buffer day before flights.
