Is Lagos good for solo travelers?

Lagos is a hard solo city, and we'd reserve it for travellers with some Africa or big-city experience behind them. TTDI scores solo-traveler safety at 2.8/10 (see the TTDI Solo-Safety Index). A base in Ikoyi, Victoria Island or Lekki Phase 1 makes it more manageable. Book every ride through an app, and look for company at galleries, live-music nights and expat running clubs.

Murtala Muhammed International Airport sits in Ikeja, on the mainland, so the drive to Ikoyi crosses the Third Mainland Bridge, and that crossing can take 50 minutes at 11pm or close to three hours at 6pm on a weekday. Book your hotel's pickup before you land. Most Victoria Island and Ikoyi hotels send a driver with a name board past the arrivals barrier, so you bypass the touts in the car park. Once you're in the city, we use Uber and Bolt for almost every trip after dark: share the trip link, check the plate before you open the door, and keep the window up in a go-slow on the bridge, where phones get grabbed through open car windows. The yellow danfo minibuses cost a few hundred naira and are hot, loud and cramped, with conductors shouting stops from the sliding door, and they are also where 'one chance' robberies happen, in which a fake bus full of accomplices picks up a lone passenger. Skip them. The Blue Line train from Marina to Mile 2 opened in 2023 and is air-conditioned and calm, a fair daytime choice. Since 2022 Lagos State has banned commercial okada motorbikes across most central districts.

Our first-trip base is Ikoyi, Victoria Island or Lekki Phase 1, gated streets with guards at every hotel driveway and a generator hum on each block. Walking around Ikoyi's Bourdillon Road in daylight is fine, but after about 9pm, Lagosians drive even short distances, and you should too. Lagos Island tends to be the place solo visitors get rattled. The Nigerian National Museum on Onikan Road and the lanes of Balogun Market are both worth a morning, with the market's smell of dye and diesel and its rolls of stiff, waxy Ankara cloth, though pickpockets work those crowded lanes and a hired local guide at roughly $30 to $50 a day is money well spent. LGBTQ+ travellers face real legal danger here: the Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act of 2014 carries prison terms of up to 14 years, and extortion gangs have used dating apps to set traps. Keep those apps deleted while you're in Nigeria.

Eating alone draws no stares in Lagos, which matters on a longer stay. At Yellow Chilli on Victoria Island, a single diner can order ofada rice with ayamase, a green pepper stew that smells of fermented locust beans and leaves your lips tingling for ten minutes. Mains there will likely run between 8,000 and 15,000 naira, which at the 1,333 naira to the US dollar rate on 19 October 2026 works out to about $6 to $11. For something cheaper, the suya stand at Glover Court in Ikoyi sells smoky beef skewers rolled in yaji pepper and wrapped in newspaper, and people eat them standing in the car park while generators drone. Weather shapes your evenings. On 19 October it was 28.8°C with light drizzle and a feels-like near 34°C. The rains usually ease off in November, and in December the harmattan brings a dry, dusty haze from the Sahara.

Lagos hotels charge by the room, meaning a solo traveller pays the full double rate. Searching for single-occupancy listings on Trip.com is mostly about finding the few properties that price a smaller room lower, because hostels in the backpacker sense barely exist. Our pick is a mid-range hotel on Victoria Island or in Ikoyi with its own security post and a 24-hour generator, at roughly $120 to $200 a night. We'd choose that over a Lekki Phase 1 Airbnb, where power, water pressure and gate staff vary from estate to estate. If you do rent, ask the host in writing about inverter backup and how many hours of grid power a day the estate gets. Buy insurance that includes medical evacuation: private hospitals such as Reddington and Lagoon on Victoria Island usually want a deposit before they treat you.

Safety notes

Women alone in Lagos report constant but mostly verbal attention, and modest dress matters more in Lagos Island markets and on the mainland than in Victoria Island lounges. Men are stopped more often at night police checkpoints that ask for cash. Stay polite, carry a passport photocopy, and have your hotel's number ready. Use ATMs inside hotels or banks, and never get into an unbooked car at night.

Ways to meet people

  • Nike Art Gallery in Lekki has five floors of Nigerian painting and adire textiles. Staff, and sometimes Chief Nike Okundaye herself, walk visitors through and start conversations.
  • Freedom Park on Lagos Island stands on the old colonial prison site, and its weekend concerts and theatre nights put you on shared benches with Lagosians.
  • New Afrika Shrine in Ikeja hosts Femi Kuti's late sessions, usually Thursdays and Sundays. Go with a Bolt ride already booked for the trip home.
  • Terra Kulture on Victoria Island stages Nigerian plays most weekends, and the restaurant bar makes a comfortable seat for a solo diner.
  • The canopy walkway at Lekki Conservation Centre draws its biggest crowds on Saturday mornings, when small groups form at the start of the bridge.
  • Lagos Hash House Harriers hold weekly social runs that end with cold Star beer, and visitors are welcome.
  • InterNations Lagos holds monthly mixers on Victoria Island for expats and newcomers.
  • Viator small-group day tours to the Badagry slave-route sites, about 90 minutes west, include transport and put you with a small group rather than a 20-person coach.

Solo-friendly accommodation

  • Mid-range hotels on Victoria Island or in Ikoyi with their own security post and 24-hour generator
  • Serviced apartments in Ikoyi for stays over two weeks
  • Airbnb rentals in gated Lekki Phase 1 estates, after confirming inverter backup in writing
  • Business hotels near the airport in Ikeja for a first or last night around a long flight
