Is Lagos family-friendly?

Lagos scores 4.2/10 for families (see the TTDI Family-Friendliness Index), and the two main reasons are traffic and heat. Children aged 5 and up will get the most from the Lekki Conservation Centre canopy walkway, a boat ride to Tarkwa Bay, and the trampolines at Upbeat Centre in Lekki Phase 1. Strollers struggle on Lagos Island's broken pavements, so bring a carrier and keep it to one outing per day.

The low score reflects logistics, not hostility. Lagos aunties will coo over your toddler in every Shoprite queue. The trouble is the go-slow, the city's name for its traffic jams, and on a weekday evening the Third Mainland Bridge can stretch the drive from Ikeja to Victoria Island past two hours. Bolt and Uber cars in Lagos rarely carry a child seat, so pack a light travel one and plan one place per day. On 19 October 2026 the thermometer read 28.8°C under light drizzle, but it felt like 33.9°C, and the air sits on your skin like a damp towel. That makes the 7am to 11am window the only sensible time for anything outdoors.

A sample day starts at the Lekki Conservation Centre on the Lekki-Epe Expressway, where monkeys rattle the branches near the gate and the canopy walkway runs roughly 400 metres above the swamp, swaying under your feet. Staff may refuse very small children on the walkway, so ask at the ticket desk before paying the extra fee. Then comes lunch and a nap in an air-conditioned room. The gentler afternoon goes to Freedom Park on Broad Street, a former colonial prison that is now a shaded garden where kids can run on the grass and you get a cold Chapman, the fizzy red punch that tastes of Fanta and grenadine. Skip the Nigerian National Museum in Onikan with under-8s: its galleries are dim, the cases have little a child can touch, and the toilets are unreliable. Nike Art Gallery in Lekki holds a child's attention better, with floor after floor of batik, beadwork and carved doors.

Tarkwa Bay is the beach to choose with children: boats from the Falomo and Lekki Phase 1 jetties take about 15 to 20 minutes, and the breakwater calms the surf compared with Elegushi or Alpha Beach, where rip currents drown swimmers most years. Many boatmen carry only adult life jackets, so bring child-size ones for under-10s. On the sand, rent a shaded cabana and pick up roasted corn and green coconuts, which kids drink through a straw while the hawkers' radios crackle Afrobeats. For a base, Victoria Island, Ikoyi and Lekki Phase 1 all have serviced apartments with two bedrooms, a kitchen and a washing machine, and these often cost less than two hotel rooms. Get the bed setup in writing, because Lagos listings regularly label a single king bed as family-sized. We'd also ask about the backup generator, since grid power cuts out daily. That matters more than a pool.

Most children take well to jollof rice, dodo (sweet fried plantain) and sugar-dusted puff-puff, but suya and pepper soup bring a chilli heat that sends under-10s grabbing for water. Sweet Sensation and Chicken Republic branches serve plain chicken, rice and meat pies, and their toilets tend to be clean. Ground peanut goes into suya spice and plenty of stews, so families with allergies should carry a written card in English. Lagos does not work with a stroller: pavements on Lagos Island and in Yaba drop away into open drains, and danfo minibuses have no room for one. The Blue Line train is smooth and air-conditioned, but it only runs from Marina to Mile 2. Changing tables are easiest to find at The Palms in Lekki and Ikeja City Mall, and at ₦10,000 to roughly US$7.50, mall play zones work out cheap for a rainy afternoon.

4/10 family-friendliness rating

Streets are uneven; baby carriers travel better than strollers.

Child safety notes

Malaria is present in Lagos all year, so ask your doctor about child-dose prophylaxis and use nets or plug-in repellents after dusk. Give children sealed bottled water only, including for brushing teeth. Hold hands near kerbs, because deep open drains line most roads. Reddington Hospital on Victoria Island and Lagoon Hospital in Ikoyi both treat international patients and take card payment.
