What are the best day trips from Lagos?

Lagos traffic is the single biggest factor in any day-trip plan. Leave Victoria Island before 6am on a Saturday and you'll reach Badagry in 90 minutes via the Badagry Expressway. Leave at 9am and it might take 3 hours. Badagry works for couples because the town splits naturally into two halves. The heritage corridor runs from the First Storey Building (built 1845 by the Church Missionary Society) through the Badagry Heritage Museum (₦500 entry, roughly $0.40) to the Point of No Return monument at the waterfront. That walk takes 2 to 3 hours. The coconut beach strip sits 4 km south, with ₦1,000 entry at most gates, cold Star Lager for ₦500, and enough empty sand on weekdays that you won't feel surrounded. One partner takes the heritage walk while the other reads on the beach, and you reconvene at a bamboo-frame restaurant along the shore by 2pm. The tilapia comes whole, charred over wood coals, served with ground pepper sauce and cold Chapman cocktails. Expect ₦3,000 to ₦5,000 per plate.

Abeokuta is 2 hours north if you leave Lagos by 7am on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway. Olumo Rock is the reason to come. The indigo-dyed cloth is hand-stamped with cassava paste, and a 6-yard piece runs ₦2,000 to ₦8,000. The smell hits 50 metres before you reach the dye pits, sharp and almost metallic. A plate of amala with gbegiri soup near the rock costs ₦500 to ₦800, the yam flour smooth and dark, the bean broth thick enough to coat your fingers.

For any of these trips, hire a driver through your Victoria Island or Lekki hotel rather than renting a car.
