Is Cancun safe?

We'd rank the Caribbean ahead of crime as the thing most likely to hurt you in Cancún. The east-facing beaches from Playa Chac Mool to Playa Delfines take open surf, and the rip currents there pull hard enough that lifeguards fly red flags on many afternoons. A black flag closes the beach, as it often does at Playa Delfines. Swim instead on the north side between km 3 and km 9, at Playa Langosta or Playa Tortugas, where Isla Mujeres blocks the swell and the water sits flat and bath-warm. Heat is the second quiet risk. At 6am on 13 October 2026 it was already 27.1°C with 86% humidity, which felt like 31.8°C before the sun had cleared the hotel towers. Carry a litre of water on Boulevard Kukulcán, where shade is scarce. October also falls inside the June to November hurricane season, so check the Servicio Meteorológico Nacional forecast before you book a ferry or a snorkel boat.

Violence in Quintana Roo is mostly cartel business, and it tends to stay in the outer regiones, the numbered districts north and west of Avenida López Portillo such as Región 227 and Región 259. A visitor has no reason to go there, day or night. To be fair, the tourist strip has not been immune. Shootings between rival dealers reached its beaches in 2021, including one at Playa Tortugas that June. Those attacks targeted sellers, which is why our editors say never to buy from the men who murmur offers along the sand near km 9. The clubs around Coco Bongo at km 9.5 are where drink-spiking reports cluster: the bass thuds through the pavement there, promoters push open-bar wristbands, and nobody is watching a solo traveller's glass. Order bottled beer and watch it opened. Use ATMs inside the BBVA or Santander branches on Avenida Tulum, because street machines in Cancún get skimmed. Rental-car drivers report traffic police on Boulevard Kukulcán asking for cash on the spot, so ask for the written ticket and pay it at the Tránsito office instead.

The R-1 and R-2 buses run the length of the Hotel Zone around the clock for about 12 pesos, roughly US$0.65 at the 12 October 2026 rate of 18.34 pesos to the dollar. They rattle, the windows stay open to the salt air, and drivers race each other between km 9 and km 12, so hold the rail. Hotel staff ride them past midnight, and we judge a full R-1 at 1am a better bet than a taxi flagged on the kerb. Cancún taxis carry no meters, so agree the fare in pesos before the door shuts, or ask the bell desk at your hotel to call one at the posted rate. Uber has been legal in Quintana Roo since a 2023 court ruling, but taxi unions have confronted its drivers, and pickups at Cancún International Airport still tend to fall through. At the airport, walk straight past the uniformed timeshare sellers in the arrivals hall: the ADO counter sits outside the doors, and its coach to the downtown terminal costs a little over 100 pesos.

Downtown after dark is easier than its reputation suggests, as long as you stay in the central supermanzanas between Avenida Tulum and Avenida Yaxchilán. Parque de las Palapas fills with families until about 11pm, the air smelling of charred corn and al pastor fat, a stage speaker crackling with cumbia, and stalls selling marquesitas, crisp rolled wafers packed with Edam cheese, for around 50 pesos. You eat on a plastic stool, so nobody asks whether the table is for two. Solo women tell us the Party Center clubs turn grabby after 1am, and that the mariachi bars on Avenida Yaxchilán get leery late, so our pick for a quiet drink alone is Avenida Náder, a few blocks east of the park. Do not walk north of Avenida López Portillo at night, and take a taxi back from Mercado 23 once its stalls shutter in the early evening.

Travelling solo in Cancún does not have to mean paying solo rates. Mayan Monkey on the hotel strip and Nomads Hotel and Hostel Ka'beh downtown both sell private rooms alongside dorms, which undercuts a double rate at a resort on km 14. Small-group catamarans to Isla Mujeres and snorkel trips to the Cancun Underwater Museum, inside the national park running from Isla Mujeres to Punta Nizuc, are priced per person. For a daylight outing on your own, we rate the Mayan Museum of Cancún at km 16.5 and the El Rey ruins at km 18, where guards stand at the gate and iguanas sun on warm limestone. Buy insurance with evacuation cover before you fly. Private hospitals such as Hospiten and Galenia commonly ask for a card deposit before treatment.
