Cancun is not a coffee town in the way that Mexico City or Oaxaca is a coffee town, and pretending otherwise does the reader a disservice. The hotel zone runs on resort americanos and lobby espresso, and most visitors never see the cafes the city drinks at: the ones tucked behind the SM grids of the centro, lining Avenida Nader and Avenida Tulum, scattered up toward the airport road and out past the Puerto Cancun mall. The list below is twelve of those rooms, ranked by how often a local would sit down in one: bakery-cafes that pull a respectable shot, brunch counters that take their eggs seriously, a milk-tea bar for the long humid afternoons, a French patisserie that has outlasted three rounds of neighbours, and yes, one Starbucks; included not because it is good but because it is the bus-stop landmark every cancunense uses to orient. Hours, addresses and phone numbers are taken straight from the public OpenStreetMap record; everything else is editorial judgement. Treat the list as a route, not a ranking: most of these sit within a ten-minute drive of each other, and you can taste your way down it in a single morning if you start when the doors open.
