Food culture
Cancun splits into two food cities. The Hotel Zone serves $30 fajita platters to tourists. Downtown, a 20-minute cab ride west, is where nearly 900,000 residents eat Yucatecan cochinita pibil, poc chuc, and lime-soaked ceviche at taco-stand prices. Cochinita tacos run 25-35 pesos at Mercado 23. Skip the Hotel Zone for meals.

The Hotel Zone feels relaxed, but downtown and nearby Maya sites like El Rey follow stricter local norms. Cover knees and shoulders at churches. Never photograph vendors or performers without asking.

ADO buses run to downtown Cancún for 100 MXN ($5.75) but skip the Hotel Zone entirely. Official airport taxis charge fixed rates by zone posted at the kiosk. Avoid unlicensed drivers inside the terminal.
