How do I get around Cancun?

The R-1 bus is your workhorse. It runs 24 hours along Boulevard Kukulcán, the single road connecting downtown Cancún to the Hotel Zone's 23-kilometer strip. The fare is 12 pesos, about $0.70 at the current rate of 17.34 MXN per dollar. Board with exact coins or a 20-peso bill. The bus stops are marked by small blue signs along Kukulcán, spaced roughly every 500 meters through the Hotel Zone. During peak hours, 8-10 AM and 5-7 PM, the buses fill up and the air conditioning struggles against the 30°C-plus heat. Off-peak, you might have a row to yourself. The R-2 runs a similar route but loops through Avenida Tulum in the downtown core, which matters if your hotel sits on the west side of El Centro rather than the beachfront.

Uber operates in Cancún and tends to run 40-60% cheaper than a taxi for the same route. A ride from the Hotel Zone's Km 9 area to Parque de las Palapas downtown costs about 120-180 pesos on Uber versus 300-400 in a taxi. Mind you, the taxi cooperatives have fought Uber hard here. Drivers sometimes ask you to sit in the front seat so the car looks like a private vehicle. Some hotels, under pressure from the local taxi syndicate, will not let Uber drivers pull into the pickup area. If that happens, walk 50 meters past the lobby entrance and request the pickup from the street. Download the app before you land. At the airport, the official taxi counter charges fixed rates by zone, around 600-800 pesos to most Hotel Zone addresses. ADO airport buses run to the downtown terminal on Avenida Uxmal for 98 pesos if you can manage your luggage on and off the coach.

Walking in the Hotel Zone is limited to whatever stretch of Kukulcán sits between your hotel and the nearest restaurant cluster. The sidewalks appear in patches, vanish for 200-meter stretches of bare shoulder, then resume. The heat is the real barrier. Even in December, midday temperatures hover around 28°C with thick humidity. In June, you are looking at 31°C and air that feels like warm wet cotton pressed against your skin. El Centro is more walkable. Parque de las Palapas and the blocks along Avenida Tulum have continuous sidewalks, shade trees, and food carts where the smell of crepe batter on a hot griddle drifts across the pavement. Those are marquesitas, crispy rolled crepes filled with Edam cheese and Nutella, about 40 pesos each. For day trips, ADO first-class buses leave from the downtown terminal. The fare to Playa del Carmen runs about 100 pesos for the 68-kilometer ride, roughly 1 hour. Tulum costs 220 pesos, about 2 hours.

Rental cars make sense only if you are driving to Chichén Itzá, 200 km west on the Mérida toll road at about 300 pesos each way, or to the cenotes along the Ruta de los Cenotes near Puerto Morelos. Within Cancún itself, a car creates more problems than it solves. Parking in the Hotel Zone is scarce and runs 50-100 pesos per hour at La Isla Shopping Village or Plaza Kukulcán. For Isla Mujeres, the Ultramar ferry departs from Puerto Juárez, a 10-minute taxi north of El Centro, or from the Hotel Zone's Playa Tortugas pier. Round-trip tickets cost about 350 pesos from either dock, with boats leaving every 30 minutes. The crossing takes 15-20 minutes and can get rough in afternoon wind. If you are prone to seasickness, take the Puerto Juárez route. It is a shorter, calmer ride than the Playa Tortugas departure.
