When's the best time to visit Cancun in 2026?

Cancun's dry season runs from December through April. Daytime highs sit around 28-30°C. Humidity drops to the mid-50s, and the Caribbean side of Punta Cancún stays calm enough for snorkeling without a wetsuit. You'll feel the trade winds on Playa Delfines most afternoons. They take the edge off the heat, even at 2pm. The water holds at 26-27°C, clear enough to spot sergeant majors and parrotfish at the reef off the Costa Occidental de Isla Mujeres national park, established in 1996. Rain is rare between December and April. Maybe 3 or 4 brief showers across the entire month of February. That said, this is also when Cancun fills up. Hotel Zone properties along Boulevard Kukulcán charge 40-60% more than their June rates, and the lobby bars at the big resorts smell like sunscreen and rum by 11am.

February and March are likely the best two months for a first visit. The Christmas and New Year's premium has faded by mid-January. By February, you're paying shoulder-to-peak rates but getting peak-season weather. The Mayan Museum of Cancún, which opened in 2012 on Boulevard Kukulcán, is walkable without the drenching sweat of summer. March brings spring breakers to the Hotel Zone, mostly around Playa Forum and Mandala nightclub. If loud crowds and thumping bass at 3pm aren't your thing, stay in Puerto Juárez or the SM 17 neighborhood in Centro. A plate of cochinita pibil tacos at a Centro taquería still costs 45-60 MXN, about $2.50-3.50 USD at current rates. April is the tail end of the dry window. Temperatures creep past 32°C, and by late April you can feel the humidity thick and warm against your skin by early evening.

November and May are the shoulder months. November is still technically hurricane season, though storms tend to arrive earlier, in September and October. You might get a day or two of heavy rain, but November temperatures sit around 28°C, and hotel rates drop 20-30% from December levels. The El Rey archaeological site on the southern end of the Hotel Zone is far less crowded in November. You can walk among all 47 structures with maybe a dozen other visitors instead of 200. Afternoon thunderstorms become routine by mid-May. They tend to roll in around 3-4pm, warm fat drops that last 30-45 minutes. May's upside is pricing. Five-star Hotel Zone properties that charge 8,000 MXN per night in February go for 4,000-5,000 MXN.

June through October is when most first-timers should stay away. Hurricane season peaks in September and October, when Cancun Airport (CUN) cancellations become a real possibility. Daytime highs run above 33°C with humidity in the 80s, and the walk from your hotel lobby to the beach feels sticky and heavy. The bigger annoyance might be sargassum, the brown seaweed that washes onto east-facing beaches in thick, sulfur-smelling mats from May through September. Playa Delfines and Playa Chac Mool get hit hardest. Hotels along Boulevard Kukulcán deploy crews with rakes and tractors each morning, but by noon the shoreline can look and smell like a compost pile. Mind you, the Cancun Underwater Museum (MUSA), opened in 2010, stays accessible year-round by boat since the 500-plus sculptures sit in open water off Punta Nizuc.
