Is Venice safe?

We rate pickpocketing as the main threat in Venice, and it works a predictable route. Teams operate on the packed Line 1 and Line 2 vaporetti between Ferrovia and Rialto, where passengers stand pressed together, and the diesel smell and the engine's rumble cover the sound of a zip being pulled. The steps of the Rialto Bridge and the Strada Nova in Cannaregio are the other hot spots, roughly from 10am to 4pm. On the boats, wear your daypack on your chest. Santa Lucia station and Piazzale Roma attract unofficial porters who grab a suitcase and then ask for €10 or more to carry it over the Ponte degli Scalzi, so say no firmly and carry your own bag. Buy ACTV tickets from the station machines or ticket booths, and tap them on the reader before you board, because inspectors check on Line 1.

After dark the historic centre goes quiet. By 11pm the backstreets of Castello and San Polo can be empty apart from water slapping against moored boats and your own footsteps echoing off damp plaster, and in our view that silence unsettles solo visitors far more than any real danger does, since street robbery in the centro storico is rare. Getting lost is the more likely problem: GPS drifts between the tall walls, so download an offline map before you go out. Many fondamenta have no railings, and most tourists who end up in a canal fell in at night. The N night boat runs along the Grand Canal and out to the Lido through the small hours. Mestre, on the mainland, is a different matter. The blocks east of Mestre station, around Via Piave, have an open drug trade and occasional assaults, and they are also where the cheapest single rooms are. If you stay in Mestre, book near Piazza Ferretto and take the tram instead of walking Via Piave late at night.

Bills cause visitors more grief than crime does. Restaurants within sight of Piazza San Marco and the Rialto add a coperto charge and a 12% servizio, and a few price fish per 100g, which can triple the total. Ask for the menu with prices before you sit down. From October to January, acqua alta can spread ankle-deep cold salt water across the square: sirens sound a few hours before a high tide, the city sets out raised walkways, and a tabaccheria will sell you rubber boots for about €10. Since 2020, the MOSE barriers at the lagoon inlets have held back most high tides, though not every one.

Eating alone is easier in Venice than in most Italian cities. The bacari along Fondamenta della Misericordia and Fondamenta degli Ormesini serve cicchetti at the counter, where a crostino of creamy baccalà mantecato with a bitter, fizzy spritz costs around €5 and nobody expects you to book a table for one. Campo Santa Margherita in Dorsoduro stays full of Ca' Foscari students until midnight, and solo travellers find conversation easily there. On Monday 19 October, Leo Middea plays the Sale Apollinee inside Teatro La Fenice, a seated room where nobody notices who came alone. At 7pm on 15 October it was 18.4°C under partly cloudy skies, mild enough to walk home along the Zattere.
