Can I leave the airport on a layover in San Francisco?

SFO sits 21 km south of downtown along the peninsula. BART connects the international terminal to Powell Street station in about 30 minutes for $10.55 one way. Trains run every 15-20 minutes. US Customs and Border Protection at SFO tends to run 20-45 minutes for most passport holders, though Global Entry drops that to under 5. Budget at least 90 minutes for the return through SFO security and back to your gate. The arithmetic adds up fast. Immigration, two BART rides, and the return buffer eat about 3 hours before you've seen anything. Six hours is the floor for a city run. Under that, stay in the terminal.

The Ferry Building on the Embarcadero is the best first stop for a solo traveler with limited time. It's a 7-minute walk from Embarcadero BART station, and the food hall runs on a no-reservation, counter-service model that works for one. Hog Island Oyster Co. serves Tomales Bay oysters at the bar, $3-4 each. The smell of sourdough from Acme Bread hits you before you're through the door. You can eat well for $15-25 and be back on BART within 90 minutes of arriving downtown. If you have 8 hours or more, the F-Market streetcar runs along the waterfront to Fisherman's Wharf in about 20 minutes for $3. Mind you, the wharf is loud and commercial, seagulls calling over fried clam chowder, but Pier 39's sea lion colony is free and worth the 10 minutes.

For layovers of 10 hours or more, a rideshare from the Ferry Building to Crissy Field costs about $12-15 and takes 15 minutes. The payoff is the closest pedestrian-level view of the Golden Gate Bridge, opened in 1937, with cold salt wind off the bay and fog threading through the cables above you. The walk across takes 35-40 minutes one way. That said, the solo safety picture needs honest framing. TTDI rates San Francisco 5.8/10 for solo-traveler safety (see /research/solo-safety/). The Tenderloin, the blocks between Union Square and Civic Center, has visible drug use and unpredictable street behavior at all hours. Civic Center BART station drops you on its edge. Powell Street station, two stops along, lands you in Union Square, which is cleaner and better lit. After dark, I'd stick to the Embarcadero waterfront, Union Square, and the Marina. Avoid SoMa south of Market Street alone after 9 PM.

Pack a layer. SFO's late-August evening temperature of 17.5°C with 75% humidity is warm for San Francisco. Fog rolls in fast off the Pacific, and waterfront temperatures can drop 5-8 degrees in under an hour. You'll feel it most at Crissy Field. For food beyond the Ferry Building, Chinatown along Grant Avenue between Bush and Broadway is a 10-minute walk from Powell Street BART. R&G Lounge does salt-and-pepper Dungeness crab, typically $35-50 depending on season, and you can eat solo at the bar without a reservation. One note on BART after dark. The system runs until midnight on weekdays but only until 9 PM on Sundays. Trains thin out after 10 PM. As a solo traveler, sit in the first car near the operator. You might have the whole car to yourself late at night, which is normal.
