What's the must-see thing in St. Augustine?

Castillo de San Marcos sits right on the Matanzas Bay seawall at 1 South Castillo Drive, about a 10-minute walk north of the Plaza de la Constitución. The Spanish started construction in 1672 using coquina, a soft local limestone compressed from millions of tiny shells. Run your hand along the outer wall and you can feel individual coquina shells under your fingertips. That material is the reason the fort survived. When the British fired cannons at it in 1702 and again in 1740, the balls sank into the spongy coquina instead of shattering it. The fort changed hands five times between Spain, Britain, and the United States. Admission is $15 for adults, free for kids under 15. The park opens at 9am. Go early on a weekday morning, when the stone courtyard still holds overnight cool and the only sound is wind off the bay. By 11am on any Saturday between March and August, the ramparts fill with school groups and the heat off the stone deck climbs past 32°C.

Fort Mose Historic State Park, 2 miles north of downtown on Saratoga Boulevard, marks the site of the first legally sanctioned free Black settlement in what became the United States. The Spanish colonial governor established Gracia Real de Santa Teresa de Mosé in 1738, four generations before the Emancipation Proclamation. The original fort is gone. What remains is a quiet boardwalk over salt marsh, interpretive panels, and a visitor center that opened in 1994. Most visitors spend 30 to 45 minutes here. The site feels modest compared to the Castillo, and that modesty is part of the point. There are no gift shops, no reenactors. You'll hear marsh birds and wind through cordgrass. The $2 parking fee is the only cost. Mind you, the access road tends to flood during heavy summer rains, so check conditions if you're visiting June through September.

The Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine faces the Plaza de la Constitución on Cathedral Place. The parish traces to 1565, which makes it the oldest Catholic parish in the continental United States. The current building dates to 1797, rebuilt after a fire in 1887 that added the bell tower and transept. Step inside on a hot afternoon and the temperature drops 5 or 6 degrees. The interior smells like old wood and candle wax. Look up at the murals on the ceiling, painted in 1905 by Hugo Ohlms. Free to enter, though they ask for a $5 donation. It's open daily from 7am, and weekday mornings tend to be nearly empty. Worth noting, the Cathedral sits at the center of the colonial-grid walking district, so you'll likely pass it several times during any visit. That makes it easy to duck in when the heat peaks around 2pm.

What to skip, or at least deprioritize. The Lightner Museum in the former Hotel Alcazar building looks impressive from the street, but the collection inside is a grab bag of Gilded Age curiosities. Fine for a rainy hour, not a top-three slot. The St. Augustine Alligator Farm on Anastasia Island has operated since 1893 and holds every living crocodilian species, which sounds compelling, but the $30 adult admission and the 90-minute minimum commitment make it a half-day activity that competes with the Castillo and Fort Mose for your first-day time. If you have a second day, it earns the trip. St. George Street, the pedestrian shopping corridor, will appear on every list you read. It's a pleasant enough walk, the smell of waffle cones and fudge drifting from about 15 shops along the way, but it's retail, not a sight. Treat it as a connector between the Castillo and the Plaza, not a destination itself.
